I'm a bit of a subs noob, but I'm trying to watch something with forced subs. It came with a .idx file which isn't working on PlexConnect. I found a .sub file which works when I start playback in VLC. I see that from Plex's official documentation that some clients don't support these formats. Does PlexConnect? Am I doing something wrong? Can I convert the .sub or .idx file to a .srt, perhaps?
PlexConnect itself only support SRT at that time - though other input filters may be added to Subtitle.py.
PMS however should be able to handle a lot more formats, and burn the subtitle into the video stream during transcoding. Does PMS support VOBSUB? I don't know...
Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure how to add input filters through Subtitle.py (again, noob!). Perhaps this is a question I should take over to a different forum...I can get subtitles to work on PHT, but not on the web interface. Perhaps that indicates that PMS doesn't properly support the subs...?
If PMS can't transcode (my own case) then you can only use MP4 (not MKV) and subtitles must be in .SRT. There are two options, one is remux the MP4 and add one extra subtitle track (in this case the .SRT does not need to be loaded in PMS), and another is to put the SRT file in the same folder as the MP4 and let PlexConnect do the job during playback.
If PMS can transcode you can use MP4 or MKV, about subtitles please refer to this topic.

1. MKV
2. I'm not sure? I have my transcoder set to Automatic and I'm running off an Early 2009 Mac Mini.
I thought PMS only transmuxed where possible mkvs to mp4 on the ATV? Transmuxing is only changing the container and is a lot less resource intensive.
You are right, but that decision is made by PMS, not by PlexConnect. PlexConnect detects that DirectPlay is possible or not, if not PMS will decide if remux is OK or if transcode is necessary. Anyhow, the processor itself must be capable of transcoding, otherwise PMS will refuse to remux (I have a Syno DS411slim running PMS, PMS cannot transcode, but I can remux using ffmpeg, even though PMS refuses to remux).
