Subtitle Issue

Hi Everyone,

I have this problem with the external .srt subtitles. When I connect to my PMS with my Ipad, I have no troubles viewing the subtitles. I can airplay to my ATV with no problems etc. But when I connect to PMS through my ATV using plexconnect and try to watch the same video file, sometimes the subtitles are not shown from the start for that specific video files and for some videos it is perfect. Does anyone have any ideas regarding this issue?

Thanks a lot in advance.

You need to give some media information for working/non working files.

Do the non-working ones work when you force transcoding?

Hey,

Great work with PlexConnect. Love it.

Discovered that subtitles are not showing on ATV3 only when playing mp4 files. Hope you can solve it.

I cannot give you media infomation. Dont now how.

But still; Non working files: mp4

Working files: AVI and MKV.

All subs are srt files.

But the good news is that mp4 files works with subs when i switch to Force Transcoding as you descriped.

Guess thats the solution for me so.

I can confirm the same for me.

Running latest atv3 beta firmware 5.4b1

File is mv4 h264 aac.

When running direct play no subtitles show. Tried both the subtitle that is located in the file and the external srt chosen from pre-play menu. It does not show.

When I force transcode it show instantly.

Checked the log but I't did not state anything about the subs as far as I could see.

Christian... any chance to test the subtitles with this m4v file streamed from iTunes to aTV/Computers...?

Yes.

Added same file to iTunes and streamed it to the same atv3 trough home sharing.

And the include sub worked instantly.

Edit !

I may actually have to change my initial report.

Now i started the movie again trough plexconnect but this time I chose a 3rd subtitle option (I missed it the first 2 times)

With this options the subtitle works. However I have to chose it manually.

So here's what happening, the atv cannot natively stream mkv or avi so your pMS box is doing some form of a transcode (usually just a container change for mkv and a full transcode for avi) during that transcode pms is injecting the srt file into the stream.  When you play an mp4 pms does nothing with the file just passes it along to the atv so no subtitles can be injected into the media stream for it.  Best bet will be to just force transcoding as stated.

Just for awareness the latest beta of PMS (PlexPass only) has sorted out a few subtitle issues:

You have to ensure that you have PMS reanalyse your media for the fix to take effect.

I do have the same problem, but how to force transcoding in PMS? Can't find the setting anywhere?

Go to the settings page in the PlexConnect UI on the ATV.

Hi, I also solved this issue (using subtitles with mp4 files), by setting force transcoding on plex connect settings (if I don't, no subtitles are displayed). But, in this way, I can't benefit of the direct play feature when it is avaiable for the other movies (or, I have to change the setting every time I'm not playing an mp4 file).

So, my question is: is there any other way to solve this issue so I can leave transcoding option to "auto" ?

The reason of the request is that i think that I'm losing video quality with some files playback (due to the forced transcoding, i suppose), compared with the quality I used to have with the classic ATV plex client.

Thanks

6.0 ATV2, 192.168.1.100(PMS), 192.168.1.12(ATV), win7-64bit (0.9.8.4) 192.168.1.100, gitHub download: 13.10.13.

BTW: Thank you very much for your great work on plexConnect !
