Detail on the media file if it is an issue related to playing a media file: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ugB-tqpROscXnmfJ4DDeUpwbq81S1oa1VEkLZxHep1s/edit

A detailed description of the issue: This is just one example of a film giving me this trouble, but I am having a lot of bad luck with getting subtitles to play. Some movies and shows, whether Force Transcode is on or not, the subtitles will play and I need to shut them off. Those ones are where the subtitle file came with the media when downloaded. Lately however I try to obtain subtitle files for films that didn't come with one, and I search for the srt file specific to that download source and whether Force Transcode is on or off I get no subtitle. I also noticed that if I choose Force Transcode, I lose my buffering, and if I choose Force Direct Play buffering returns, but either option or a mix of the two still doesn't play subtitles. Pout. (The time stamp of where I am in this movie, The A-Team, is at 1:15 where the Mexicans are interrogating Hannibal and speaking with each other).

Once you shut them off do they reappear the next time you try to play the file?

Could you try typing the following into any web browser:-
192.168.2.11:32400/library/streams/11074
Do you get the srt sub file displayed?

No, those subtitle files do as they are told. I brought it up to merely show the randomness this seems to have

I did that and it's asking me where I want to save that file?

Umm... for me the web browser just displays the srt file as a text file, but it could depend on which browser you use, could you post the srt file for me to have a look at.

The browser I use is Chrome.
Here's the link for the srt: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B9vFNVhhv-BtVGN2Y0RnLVVQQnM/edit
Thanks!!
You have file that is optimized for streaming with external subtitles (my case).
Workaround is to force transcoding, otherwise PConnect does not know how to handle subtitles. At least that was the case last time I tried.

I have attempted Force Transcoding and I get the same result. I saw in a lot of other threads people getting some success with that though, so thanks for sharing that work around.
Ok, something I’ve just noticed is that your video file is an mp4 which means it will be direct played on the ATV which means that external srt subs wont work PlexConnect has no sub rendering code, it relies on the file being transcoded to add the subs. Sorry.
All I can suggest is to use a program like subler to mux the subs into the file.

Okay, that does make sense roidy, thanks for having a look at that. I'm curious if, aside from you looking at this, if there was a resource I neglected to read that gave that sort of insight?
I think that subler is a Mac app :-(, ever hear tell of a comparable one for Windows?
And out of curiousity, how does subler, once install on the PMS, get the subtitle info to the Apple TV through PlexConnect?
No real resource, but the last post of this thread:- http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/73952-bug-some-subtitles-not-showing/ explains the different subtitle types and how PlexConnect handles them.
Sorry, I don’t know of an alternative to subler for Windows.
Subler isn’t installed on PMS, it’s a standalone program that you run the video file through and it alters the file by muxing the subs into the file.

If you have chosen always transcode in PlexConnect settings and subtitles are still not there, than something needs to get fixed on PMS or PlexConnect side. With forced transcoding PMS should hand over compatible file with subs.
Let me refresh this topic.
I expect PlexConnect's own subtitle renderer is still far future?
If so, would it be reasonable that if the file is MP4 and subtitles are external, transcode kicks in when transcoding is set to AUTO in PConnect settings?
I haven't tried latests commits but the older ones does not seem to support this.
