Somebody use the fire stick 4k with Denon Avr x4200w and Dolby Atmos will work? From what I read Dolby Atmos is created on 4k max under Dolby digital ( 4k max doesn’t support Atmos under Dolby true hd with codec format A_truehd). Mean then the 4k max can play sound only codec Ec3_joc. I believe the stick can’t play either files with codec Eac3_joc because this type of Atmos is created under Dolby digital plus.
My denon X4200 do not have Dolby digital but it has DTS HD master, DTS neural:X, Dolby true HD, Dolby surround and of course Dolby Atmos.
My question is that 4k max can play Dolby Atmos sound and maybe is possible to play files with Eac3_joc? Most of my plex server movies are with Eac3_joc codec.
There are two types of Dolby Atmos for home theater.
TrueHD + Atmos is the type found on Blu-ray discs.
Dolby Digital Plus + Atmos is the type used by streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon, etc.
No Amazon device supports passthrough of TrueHD audio. If you play media with TrueHD audio, it will be transcoded by Plex Media Server. The FireStick will send it to your AVR as either Dolby Digital (AC3) or Dolby Digital Plus (EAC3) depending on the FireStick audio settings. Atmos information is lost in the transcode process.
The FireStick 4K & 4K Max will passthrough Dolby Digital Plus + Atmos audio to your AVR.
dts and dts-HD audio will both direct play. It will be converted to either AC3 or EAC3 by the FireStick depending on the FireStick audio settings. For dts-HD audio, only the dts core is used. The -HD part is ignored.
Connect the FireStick to an HDMI input on your AVR.
Set the FireStick audio (not Plex) for Best Available.
In the Plex app on the FireStick, set passthrough = HDMI.
Select the appropriate sound mode on the Denon. Start with Auto.
If you want TrueHD + Atmos audio, acquire a Nvidia Shield Pro and connect it to your Denon receiver. The Shield will passthrough TrueHD + Atmos and dts-HD MA audio to the receiver.
Thank you very much for the informations. I understand wrong all the information until now.
I don’t look in the user manual for Dolby digital. Just check the info from denon page.
One more question
I believe that the TV doesn’t matter if he got Dolby Atmos sound. My TV is an philips 4k without Dolby Atmos Codecs.
The sound will go on denon receiver and ignore the TV options.
The 4k max will be connected to the av receiver. And the TV will be connected to the TV on ARC and CEC hdmi port.
The av receiver is capable to get out video in 4k 60 fps with HDR10. TV also the same options for video play. Missing only Dolby sound or Dolby Atmos. I don’t check exactly what Codecs can be play on it.
The ideea is that does not matter if TV have Dolby or not to play video true av receiver and get Dolby Atmos on my speakers.
Thanks for your answer
Ok. I will do like this for a moment because I order already the fire stick 4k max. Is an good option for cheap player. If I don’t like, I will send it back and spend 200 for nvidia shield TV Pro. Maybe is better option
