Dolby Vision error on Apple TV app

Server Version#: 1.26.2.5797
Player Version#: AppleTV v8.3

I get this error: DOVIProfile Limitation Applies 5==5 Color Space is Not Supported

when I try to play a 4K file in Dolby Vision with these stats, using Direct Play:
HEVC, Main 10@L5@High, Dolby Vision, Version 1.0, dvhe.05.06, BL+RPU

Infuse plays the file just fine, though, via Direct Play connected to the same Plex Server. Why won’t the Apple TV Plex app itself play it?

The player app doesn’t have access to using that profile – hence the limitation pops up.

Infuse, because it’s written from the ground up on a different API, has access which Plex does not.

Infuse connects to your Plex server. If that’s the better player for you then connect Infuse to your server and have at it.

In that case, I moved this to be a Feature Suggestion.

Have you seen the other big discussion about this? Here

For DV Profile 5, Plex passes the file 100% as-is directly to the Apple player/decoder.

I’ll bet your file isn’t perfectly compatible with the Apple player/decoder. Most DV P5 samples from the Internet aren’t.

Can you share a link to the source of the file, OR the output of mediainfo -f, or if you’re using the latest version of PMS, the full XML Info for the file?

I hope I can suggest a way to fix the file.

Thanks - here you go:

I have similar files that work well. I’m surprised (and happy) to see dvh1, that’s relatively uncommon, but is correct and necessary for Apple devices to play DV P5 content.

I get the same error if I connect an Apple TV 4K to a non-4K or non-Dolby Vision display. (Or using an Apple TV 3rd Gen, which doesn’t support Dolby Vision.)

What model Apple TV are you using?
Is it connected to a 4K, Dolby Vision-capable display?

In the Apple TV SettingsVideo and Audio, have you tested the 4K and Dolby Vision Formats, so the Apple TV knows they’re available?
Are the Match Content options enabled?

Apple TV 4K, newest model, connected to a 4K Sony 850D - not a DV display. DV files do play through the Apple TV with other apps, though, just not Plex. ATV format = 4K HDR 60. Match content (dynamic range & frame rate) = Both Off.

So, I mean, like, I guess, what do you expect to happen?

On Apple devices, Plex passes Dolby Vision P5 directly to the Apple player & decoder.

The ATV 4K is itself actually capable of tone mapping Dolby Vision P5 to HDR10 or SDR for output.
But only when connected to a DV-capable display!

TV ATV Settings Match Content Test Video Format Results TV Mode Observation
Dolby Vision TV DV On DV P5 Success Stays DV Plays in DV
Dolby Vision TV SDR On DV P5 Success Change to DV Plays in DV
Dolby Vision TV HDR Off DV P5 Success Stays HDR Tone mapped
Dolby Vision TV SDR Off DV P5 Success Stays SDR Tone mapped

Here’s the same ATV 4K connected to a non-Dolby Vision TV.
HDR10 → SDR tone mapping still works; DV is nonfunctional:

TV ATV Settings Match Content Test Video Format Results TV Mode Observation
HDR10 TV SDR On DV P5 Failure n/a Color Space is Not Supported
HDR10 TV SDR On HDR10 Success Change to HDR Plays in HDR10
HDR10 TV SDR Off HDR10 Success Stays SDR Tone mapped

(I suspect this behavior is by design for licensing reasons. Or maybe it’s an Apple bug!)

(I believe that Infuse uses a different mechanism for tone mapping.)
