Double SRT Subtitles - TCL/Roku TV

Enabling external SRT subtitles on the TCL/Roku TV results in double subtitles. VOBSUB titles work fine. SRT subtitles on other clients work fine.

Have you checked to see if subtitles are burnt into your video?

Everything works fine on other TVs and web browsers.

What happens on your Roku and “other devices” when you play them back without selecting subtitles or de-selecting the subtitles? (No subtitles)

It plays clean - no subtitles. There was a post here from about six months ago (comments closed) that reported same problem.

You’ve got me stumped. I do use Plex for Roku (both released and Beta builds) and have not seen THAT issue before.

Personally, I have deleted and/or removed all VOB, SUB and all other video overlay subtitles and replaced them (converted them) to text based subtitles.

It’s way more efficient and scaleable for different screen sizes and resolutions - which can not be controlled with VOB and other similar formats.

I use the free Subtitle Edit app. It can be a pain to correct the OCR, but it’s also not the end of the world…

Maybe someone else who reads your thread has more/better ideas or a resolution for you.

Also, naming the “other devices” – if they are also using a Plex Player app, could help diagnose the issue since many of the builds share some code between them.

Thank you for considering it. I have a huge DVD collection that’s been digitized. A significant number of discs are from the early 80s UK, before closed captions were common. WhisperAI does an amazing job of generating SRT files for the more obscure titles that aren’t available from opensubtitles and the like.

They play perfectly on my Samsung TV, Android phone and desktop web browser. I thought the Plex server might be doing something with close captions that the TV was interpreting, but CC is off on the TV.

That’s a great point of concern for Roku CC/Subtitles - I don’t think of it often since my Roku TV was set up several years ago. :wink:

Yeah, Roku is really strange about the way they treat subtitles in the Roku Settings and how it works hand-in-hand…

I’m ripping a DVD collection now, and totally understand what you are talking about.

For series in particular, I almost ALWAYS use the CC/Subtitles included on the DVD since finding matching and then verifying that the subtitles sync with what I ripped is too brain and time intensive than converting them.

On another note:

If these are DVDs you ripped a while ago, it’s not likely you’re going to watch them immediatly…

Subtitle Edit can batch convert dozens of files in serial fashion. It takes a while this way but I’ve had good success with it.

I open a different process of Subtitle Edit for each Season and convert each season in another process in parallel.
