Download a video

I have to apologize, I’m very new to Plex. I purchased my daughter’s play video through her school and was basically forced to use this to get it. It was shared with me by some person I don’t know who apparently won’t respond to my questions. All I want to do is download the video, but using both the desktop and browser versions, that option is not available when I click on the video menu. Does this stranger have to give me access? I purchased a monthly Plex pass hoping that would do the trick, but of course, it didn’t. I’m sure Plex is great for those who use it, but I really have no need for it, I just need this one video. Help!

Plex DocumentationDownloads for Offline UseDownloads Overview

Yes.

The server administrator must give you access to download from their server. You also need a Plex Pass.

Downloading is possible with the Plex Desktop apps (Windows/Mac/Linux) and the Plex mobile apps (Android/iOS). It is not supported for the web interface or Smart TV apps.

Honestly, for this use case Plex is not well suited.
The guy should have probably sent you a WeTransfer download link (or used some comparable service).

The download feature of Plex makes it difficult/impossible to get to the downloaded file. You would have to keep the Plex app around indefinitely to play it in the future.

Thanks for the response. So is there no other alternative or work around available? Like what if something happens to the administrator where they can’t give access anymore?

Yes this is exactly why I’m trying to download it. It’s unnecessary to have this just for the one time I may watch this in the future.

If you log on as the admin account of the server, and use a web browser client, you can download the original file using the “Download File” option. It would be yours to keep wherever you saved it.

This is not a good option to do as strangers. Plex really is not the option I’d recommend. Have them upload to a file storage place, or youtube.
