Thank you for the logs from the server and the app
The downloads for 2001 A Space Odyssey.m4v failed for 2 different reasons
The attempts to download at Feb 17, 2023 08:06 and 08:16 failed because the download needed to be transcoded (because of the subtitles side-car srt file) and there was insufficient disk space on the server for that - At these times you had a ram disk for the transcoder temp files /mnt/ramdisk/Transcode
The 3rd attempt started at 08:41 was ok on the server side - because you then switched the transcode temp files to be default and that used /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Cache/Transcode - but the Plex for iOS on the iPad ran out of storage

This happened when the download reached about half way through
Last logged % complete on the server side was 49.5%

The app logs show 3,824,148,473 bytes downloaded
At the time there was about 2.5 Gb of downloads for Fawlty Towers on the iPad
Did you have a Storage Limit set in the Plex for iOS Settings for Downloads ?
The 3rd attempt started at 08:41 was ok on the server side - because you then switched the transcode temp files to be default and that used /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Cache/Transcode - but the Plex for iOS on the iPad ran out of storage
The 3rd attempt downloaded to the iPad ok. That was after I set the quality from Original to 1080p HD.
I realized that the RAM disk was too small (Fawlry Towers being small files d’l’'d ok in ram), so I switched to the Plex default cache for transcoding).
Did you have a Storage Limit set in the Plex for iOS Settings for Downloads ?
I have it as “No Limit”
…but I have 10G available on the iPad, so with 2001 a Space Odyssey being about 8G Original, space on the iPad was tight for that test d/l.
With that said, The New Downloads is now working for me.
Tried another test, this time with Dr. Strangelove.
Media file is 5G, iPad Available Space is 9G.
Did 2 tests, Original Quality and 1080p HD.
Both Transcoded, but freezes on Downloading.
I have PLEX on my Galaxy Galaxy S22 Ulra. If I’m on Wifi I can save photos to my phone. If I’m on 5G cellular, I can’t even though I have it selected and made sure to have enough internal storage space on my DOWNLOAD settings.
Downloading vids seems fine on cellular, why not saving photos? I can’t share them to an email either as a work around.
Tried Dr Strangelove again this morning and it downloaded fine. Not sure what happened yesterday, but the New Downloads is working much better now (in the past I was never able to download any movies or TV shows)
Actually, increasing the size of the disk is easy, expanding the volume in windows is impossible due to the recovery partition being placed next to the main partition. I could get an app that would do it, but more trouble than it’s worth. But I gave the transcoder it’s own drive with 128GB to play with. No change. Still barfs. Plex Media Scanner Deep Analysis (2).zip (595.3 KB)
The actual precise times for the freeze / start are very important
I can see a download starting at Feb 17, 2023 16:09:47 for Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
I can see it in progress in the logs but then at 16:17:25 it was cancelled - there is no indication as to why - did you abort what you believed was a frozen / hung download ?
This shows the progress up to 2 seconds before it was cancelled
Thanks for the server logs. For downloads issues, it is crucial that diagnostics are provided from both sides - the plex app doing the download and the plex media server
I can see transcodes for downloads starting for Toy Story.mkv and Toy Story 2.mkv at 21:00 on 18th Feb but the transcode is beings topped by the Plex client app a few seconds later. Would need the corresponding logs for this period from the Plex app
Observation: Seeing a lot of relaunches of Plex Media Server - a bit strange relaunching every few minutes. - was it to do with the network issue I mention below?
PMS Launch at 17:43 - ran to 20:38
PMS Launch at 20:39 - ran to 20:40
PMS Launch at 20:42 - ran to 20:47
PMS Launch at 20:52 - ran to 21:00
PMS Launch at 21:00 - ran to 21:02
PMS Launch at 21:02 - ran to 21:05
Transcode completed within 2.5 minutes but 5 minutes later when you thought it was frozen - the download was going but the speed for some reason was only about 350 Kbytes a second and it had only downloaded 157 MBytes.
You mentioned the movie was 5Gb in size - do you recall noticing how big was the output.mkv file in the transcode sessions folder when the transcode completed ?
Yes, It was about 4.8Gb in the transcode sessions folder when the transcode completed. The Original was already reduced to 1080p with Handbrake, and I had the iPad setting to 1080p HD (Medium) (higher than needed for an iPad, but I was testing different quality settings)
uhh, how do I find the logs on an android device to post them?
fyi: downloading seems to be working again.
Weird on internet being down.
As to relaunching, I was making change and rebooting it, that’s probably what you are seeing.
PMS as a service. Yes, this should be a native thing. However, this method has been working for quite some time, I’m reluctant to change it, but I’ll read up on it more for sure. Thanks.
You get the android logs emailed to your mailbox and then attach the zip here together with the server logs zip and indication of when the download was abd what it was
I’ve got this mostly working, but on some that the transcoder did the transcode, but didn’t dl, I’ve deleted and made new the transcode directory, but Plex seems to think it’s still avail and won’t re-transcode the vids.
If I do a new vid, it works, but on these ones that were transcoded it just sits and spins.
If Deleting Downloads on the plex mobile client is not clearing up then please provide diagnostics for it, so it can be investigated
Download the Plex for Android logs zip after attempting to delete the earlier attempted download and starting a fresh download
Also include the debug server logs
And also screenshots of the downloads screen on the Plex for Android app and details of what was downloaded earlier and being deleted / re-downloaded
Please make sure the server debug logging is not disabled and ensure it is already enabled before starting the sequence of deleting / re-downloading …
I am completely unable to download anything onto my iOS device. I am puzzled that an application with this much “community” support consistently fails, and fails in incomprehensibly myriad ways.
