Downloading a file from a PLEX server

According to this link I should be able to download a file from a PLEX server since I have been a member before 8/1/22 (I can’t find my exact signup date on PLEX - where is it?).
But I don’t see how to do that (even though I’m a member for at least 10 years).

Can someone please tell me the procedure to download a file from my friend’s PLEX server?

Thanks,
Dan

The server owner has to explicitly grant you the permission to download.

Otto,

So you’re saying that once the owner grants me permission and since I’m a member prior to 8-1-2022, I should then see a DOWNLOAD button?

BTW, does PLEX show my sign-up date anywhere?

Thanks for your reply.
Dan

Click on your username on one of your posts.

If you are using one of the supported Plex apps, yes. (list is in my link above)

Your current account was created very well before the cutoff date, as far as I can see.
Try accessing https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/profile (though it might not work for you at this time, since it is still a feature in testing)

I was wrong. That shows the date of your first forum access, not when your account was created.

Otto:
I spoke with my friend (the server owner) and he granted me download permission a long time ago. Yet I don’t see a download button for me to click on. Am I supposed to install the Plex Media Server(https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/) on my PC (it doesn’t sound like a client app)? Or maybe I don’t see a DOWNLOAD button because I’m not a paying member (i.e., I don’t have an ACTIVE PASS SUBSCRIPTION, even though I did register prior to 8/1/22).

I tried your link to see my signup date but no such date shows.
Thanks for your timely replies!
Dan

Thanks anyhow.
Dan

No.
But you must use one of the mentioned Plex client apps.
The Plex Web app is not supported for Downloads.

Sorry - can you be more specific about which client app I should use (as a Windows 10 user) so that I may download files from my friend’s PLEX server? If you could provide a link to the client app that would be a big help.
Thanks,
Dan

“Plex for Windows”. (NOT “Plex HTPC”)

I went to this page and cannot find PLEX FOR WINDOWS.
I do not have a PLEX PASS; is that why I cannot find PLEX for WINDOWS?
Dan

This is a support page.
Downloads are to be found on here: https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/#plex-app
Pick “Windows” in the left selector.

Hi Otto:
I’m not sure how I ever would have found your link, so thanks very much!
After installing this 170MB file, just to be certain, I should then see a button that will allow me to download files from my friend’s PLEX server for which he has authorized me. Do I have that right?
Thanks very much for your patience,
Dan

It SHOULD work. For accounts before a certain date, they should be grandfathered to work as long as the server owner has the Pass. If your account is before that date (which you claim) and you install and run the Windows Player (Plex for Windows), it SHOULD work.

If it doesn’t, it still should have, and I’d recommend the Plex dev support get involved.

FWIW, I have a download button, but my account has the pass, so the only value of this screenshot is to show you what it looks like:

I was reluctant to install such a large file that I would only occasionally use, but your comment and screenshot are very encouraging so I’ll go for it (even though dividing by zero is a no!no! 8^)
Thanks very much,
Dan
