The server is Linux (OpenMediaVault running plexmediaserver) and the client in this case a SamsungTV (Series F).
Scenario: I start to watch something in English (which is not my native language but I master quite well). 5 min into the movie I realise it might be better to get some help from the subtitles as the movie has a strong Southern US accent (Mud 2012 for reference), subtitles I didn’t have at that point of time. So I download them manually from opensubtiltes.org using my laptop and stored them into the same folder where the video lives on the server.
At this point, I’m not 100% clear what is the exact procedure to make the subtitles visible by the player.
I’ve tried to restart the plexmediaserver process on the server, forced a video refresh using the webgui (IP:32400/web/index.html#!/dashboard), quitted and reopened the plex add on the TV. No success.
I ended up switching off everything and restarting… at thta point it eventually worked. Obviously not a practical way and very time consuming, so I was wondering is there’s a better way to achieve this or perhaps a good idea to add a little function to simplify the detection of subtitles in the media folder?

Have another example today. For some reason Plex belives there are only internal subtitles available despite the fact that I have added manually external .srt to the video folder.
When I try to play the video I’m not given the option to select the external subtitles.
Have unmatched/matched again, refreshed… nothing.
Any help please?
The principal method is this:
You name the subtitle file exactly like the video file on your disc (except for the filename extension of course). You can add the language code right before the filename extension so it doesn’t show up as ‘Unknown’ within Plex.

For this to work there are some prerequisites necessary:
You make sure that the user plex (which is what PMS is running as under Linux) has at least ‘read’ privileges to the subtitle file.
The agent ‘Local Media Assets’ must be active under Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Freebase / TheMovieDB. It doesn’t need to be in the topmost position, but it must be active.
Your subtitle file, if it is in a text-based format (like most prominently SRT), must use the UTF-8 text encoding.
Many downloaded subtitles are not in this text encoding and are using some national codepage. You may want to look into the SRT2UTF-8 channel, which can convert the encoding almost automatically.
Once you added the subtitle file, you want to leave the movie’s preplay screen for a few seconds. Upon you returning to it, the server should take notice of the new subtitle file and, after a few seconds, it should be available for selection.
