Downloading Movies

I have just joined Plex and I did download the Plex Server. Looking over the FAQ, it says to hover over the 3 dots and go down to download to download a movie. There is no download option and I can’t seem to find that option anywhere on the Plex site. I am working inside the Plex Server as it says to do. Thanx - Tom

Are you trying to download content from the Movies & Shows on Plex, or from a library someone shared to you ?

If so, you are not able to download content from Movies & Shows on Plex and the person that shared the library with you would need to enable download before you could use that feature

I don’t understand then, reading through the information on the Plex site, it said that you can watch movies in real time or download them onto your compute to watch later. We travel a lot and I’d like to be able to download some movies to watch when we’re on a plane.

I’m simply trying to download the movies that I find on Plex. In Plex’s directions on downloading it says:
If you’re logged into the same Plex account as you use on your Plex Media Server, the Download action in the web app lets you download the source file to the machine you’re using. To do this:

  • Open the Item detail view
  • Click and select Download
  • The file downloads to the browser’s download folder OR
  • The file will load in a player in the browser window (depending on how your browser handles the action)

Again, when I first looked at Plex, the copy to sign up said that you can watch Plex movies in real time or download to your computer to watch later.

You cannot sync or download the media from Plex’ video on demand service (Movies & TV on Plex). The FAQ / support article you’ve found refers to downloading and syncing media you’ve hosted on an own / personal Plex Media Server with your own content.

As already mentioned that you cannot download Plex Movie and TV content. You need to add your personal movies and TV shows to Plex first and then you can download the movies or TV shows to your devices.
