Downloads working on iOS, but failing on Android, although transcoding has started

Server Version#: 1.25.6.5577
Player Version#: 7.28.1 (iOS) 8.30.1.31022 (Android)
plexpass owner

When I select download on iOS, the movie instantly starts downloading as expected. Using the same procedure on Android, it quickly ends up in an error “an error occured downloading this element. tap or swipe”.

I see a transcoding output file under /cache/transcode/session with growing size and server log file shows “[Transcode] Activity: updated activity c765f80a-77df-4de4-a045-c79037427fbf - completed -1.0% -” but this gets suddenly deleted and the server log file shows an entry “/video/:/transcode/universal/stop?session=xxx” from my client. So it seems the client does not pick up the conversion and therefore cancels the transcoding instead.

What’s broken in here?
Thank you!

I also can’t Download on Android over wifi.

Synology DSM6 - v1.25.8
Android 10 - v9.0.0.31676 (wifi)

Download over mobile network works…!?
Only local Network over wifi is not working.

hey Plex team… nobody?

Same here on Android.

Same here, error in the android app log :

I have a similar problem
windows doesn’t work as well

hey Plex team… awake?

I’ll throw my hat in the ring too.

Downloads do not work for me or my users on the Android app.

This issue seems to be as old as the Download feature is. Shameful.

Edit - Setting Google as my primary (8.8.8.8) (and secondary (8.8.4.4)) DNS seems to have largely resolved the issues. However, the downloads are cripplingly slow and downloads don’t track (notification stuck showing "Initializing Downloads…"

Edit 2 - downloads still (often, not always) fail (Initializing Downloads) if the playlist (or artist) is over ~40 song. Some playlists throw “An Error Occurred Please try again later”. Nothing is appearing in the logs when this happens. Video media is also entirely hit or miss. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. This is more frustrating than when nothing worked. The "Help & Support tab on my Android devices is showing “Server Port 32500”, whereas 32400 is correct

Adding to the woes.

Downloads don’t work at all ( Plex Android 9.0.6.31998, Android 10/11; Server (on Unraid) 1.25.9.5721). Internal / external storage. Files of all sizes and formats

Various suggestions including setting every quality setting to Original does nothing

Server is throwing no errors (during download attempts, logs below)

Doesn’t work on Wi-Fi or 4G/ LTE/ 3G

App is being left in the fore on “Downloads - Items” which, contrary to Plex documentation, doesn’t stop the screen timeout

Downloads work on Plex for Windows 1.43.4.2971-aa2133cc - however does transcode despite download quality being set to “Original” for both Music and Video

For music - Downloads always show “There was an error downloading this file” but the notification continues to count up the number of tracks as if they are downloading. Once it completes, the notification becomes “Some items could not be downloaded” and none are available.

For videos (TV and Films) - Downloads always shows “There was an error downloading this file” with no notification showing otherwise
Android log.txt (4.1 MB)
Android log (directly after reinstall).txt (136.3 KB)

Logs RE Edit 2 - Logs taken right after server restart, show downloads being refreshed (via dragging down) and an attempt to add a new playlist to download
On a side note; most the images on “Downloads - Items” are wrong - Image from Playlist X gets used for playlists X, Y, Z

I have a similar issue. New Download feature works if I’m not on the local LAN i.e Mobile data. When I try over WIFI it looks like its going to work but then just stops with no error on the console.

@support Does anyone from Plex read these forums? What’s the subscription for if not for latest versions and Tech Support?

Thanks for reporting and providing logs. I have been able to replicate so someone from the team will pick this up.

Same issue here, downloads were working fine when the new feature was first launched but all downloads are failing on android devices now regardless of settings used.

I also see some messed up lines in the console around the same time i try to initialize any dl’s, unsure why they show over the top of each other like this? (Both are individually clickable and related to transcode on android)

Having the same issue. Once it worked, but now I can’t download anything. I did not change anything in the configuration options. In the console you can see this:

Glad you’ve been able to replicate the issue. Could you confirm whether someone is looking into the issue related to the DNS Rebind Protections, or the larger issues that “Downloads” is clearly facing? @geosidi

Further logs and notes (relating to Downloads on Android 9.0.6.31998)

Time
1354 - Refreshed downloads - Nothing happened in the app, or showed on the console
1403 - Refreshed downloads - Waiting for downloads shows, for sub 5 seconds. Then nothing, nothing on console.
1406 - Restarted device - Movie shows “Waiting for download”, Playlist claim “Downloading”. Nothing on console, nothing appears downloaded
1419 - Total quantity downloaded jumps by a whopping 80MB, must be a couple of songs downloaded
1423 - Downloads - Items tab changed to show “No Downloaded Content”. Content still visible via Downloads - Libraries. Despite this, an “Initializing Downloads” notification appears. Nothing on console
1425 - The app crashed, was reopened. Downloads don’t start

After the logs, somehow, despite not removing any content from “Downloads” the total amount downloaded decreased. In the day between taking logs and uploading, nothing has downloaded and the playlists (seen via Downloads - Items) appear to think they’re fully downloaded despite only have downloaded a fraction of what they should.

A movie also appears as if downloaded, despite not being. Clicking on this item gives no feedback, and the item is (obviously) not shown in Downloads - Libraries

Any update from the plex team on this? I am running out of previously synced items on my tablet and can’t sync anything new.

same here. it’s a shame nothing has ever positively happended to that.

If there’s anything to be taken from this thread, it’s that Plex is not to be trusted, or to waste your money on.

This basic feature does not work, still - I have just transferred all that I want onto a memory card to play on Kodi when we are away because Plex is simply not to be trusted.

As usual.

Today I was reading some other threads regarding issues with pihole and problems encountered if your router was running DNS rebinding protection. On a whim, I disabled DNS rebinding protection on my router and now plex is happily downloading files to my tablet. Maybe this will help other until Plex to make this work for all.

Disabling a security feature is never a good idea!

Also i dont see a reason for change anything on my router security settings if Donwload on all clients work - but not on Plex for Android. (via local wifi)

Furthermore, the download in Plexamp works perfectly.
