Hi all,
I have a DS918+ with a Plex 64 bit media server, a Plex Pass and enabled the acceleration option for transcoding, but still my NAS is using >90% when a 4k movie is transcoded. Any thoughts?
*I’ve noticed in some other topics that it might be related to subtitles that are forcing the transcoding to go via the CPU of the NAS. I tried to disable the subs and it didn’t make any difference.
I’ve downloaded this movie via Radarr in the Remux 2160 quality. Is it better to choose for a different format? Or is there some synology package that I can use to transcode the audio and subtitles before I stream it to my tv?
I’m still trying to find my way in the synology-plex world so really appreciate if you can help me out
*BTW: I had the assumption that the Plex Pass would deal with my problems, by enabeling the accelaration option. For me it’s still not clear why this is not working and why the NAS CPU has to do all the hard work. Can you maybe elaborate on this?
Thanks for this very complete explanation. I understand it much better now.
Just tried to use Handbrake to transcode the movie and it worked. The only thing is that it takes a full day to transcode the full movie. For me it’s then just not worth the effort.
I also noticed that in most movies that I downloaded with Radarr subs are already embedded which will lead to forced transcoding. Do you maybe know if it’s possbile to download these files without the embedded subs?
When I would download 2160p quality, with 5.1 audio track and no subs then I don’t think it’s necessary to transcode the files with Handbrake.
mkvmerge (or mkvmerge-gui) will allow you to remove unwanted subs from any stream without the need to use HandBrake. By not using HandBrake, processing is performed in minutes with no loss of video resolution.
Thanks for this. I tried it, but it’s still taking quite some time (much less than Handbrake -1h+).
I noticed that when I download Bluray 2160p there are no buffering issues. With WEBDL and REMUX I do have these issues. So for now I will just stick to Bluray and otherwise go for 1080p (where none of the file formats are delivering issues). Appreciate if someone can explain why the bluray file formats are not causing issues.
Yes, I already started configuring the restrictions in sonarr and radarr. I’ve checked the mediafiles of the movies (as you said) and the difference seems to be that the Bluray downloads have a TRUEHD audio codec and the Remux (which didn’t work) a DCA audio codec. Both had a HEVC video codec.
I think the main reason is that my Samsung tv is not supporting DTS (I don’t get why they stopped supporting DTS…)
So I’m now going to download a Remux file with the TRUEHD audio codec to see what happens.
My bad, it’s not supporting both. But when a MKV file contains the TRUEHD codec then there also seems to be an AC3 codec. That’s why I’m able to play those files without stutter. Can you confirm that a TRUEHD codec always comes with an AC3 codec? Or am I just lucky with these files?
