DS918 will not launch PMS since update

Server Version#: PlexMediaServer-1.29.2.6364-6d72b0cf6-x86_64_DSM7.spk
Player Version#: -

Hi,
Today I loaded a few videos into our existing PMS setup and I saw through the web console that there was an update available. As I had not updated for a while, I went ahead and downloaded the spk, stopped PMS on the NAS and installed the latest version. Since then PMS refuses to start up: it appears to start (takes about 30sec), the screen briefly refreshes to give the option to open the console, but by the time I click on “Open” it has reverted back to “Manually Stopped” status.

I have access to the logs section on the Share, but there are no logs in the share with a time stamp newer than Sept 2022, so I have no idea if it’s just not writing logs at all, or if it’s writing to somewhere else.
On this link: plex_download_urls/linux-x86_64.synology-dsm7.md at master · axlecrusher/plex_download_urls · GitHub
…I found older versions so I have also tried completely uninstalling (keeping original settings) and reinstalling an older version (PlexMediaServer-1.28.0.5999-97678ded3-x86_64_DSM7.spk) but it has the exact same behaviour.

The NAS appears to be running fine otherwise, was working on a VM that I have running on it earlier today without issues. I have also tried restarting the NAS and doing the whole procedure again but it makes no difference.

Any ideas please as I’m lost…

Thanks a lot!

are you on dsm7?

Hi yes I am… DSM 7.1-42661 Update 4

Thanks!

where are you looking for logs (give full file path)? have you pulled a download directly from here instead of instead of that github?

The log files for PMS on DSM 7 systems are in /PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server/Logs.

If available, using File Station, please compress/zip the Logs directory and upload the zip file to this thread.

Exact steps I followed were:

  1. offered upgrade in Plex Web client…clicked on the link, downloaded the latest spk file and went through the manual install process
Thereafter the crashes/not being able to start PMS on Synology began.
  2. Uninstalled PMS in the Plex package center, went to https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/ and manually downloaded the latest package. Went through the manual install steps…same crashing behaviour.
  3. Search the internet since Plex does not provide download links to older versions; found the Github selection and downloaded the last major version (1.28) and tried again…same behaviour.

The log file location that I’m looking at is:

As you can see, the latest PMS.log file (which I guess is the one we’d need?) is dated 31 August, which makes no sense to me…

Thanks again!

EDIT: sorry not sure why it didn’t save the screenshot the first time round…

Please upload the existing log files. They might contain useful information.

Sorry, I have no access to the NAS while I’m away at work. Will upload the log files when I get in this evening…thx!

Hi again,

Have sent you the logs via PM. Please let me know if you need anything else…

Thanks again!

Ok I’ve been playing with it this afternoon and it seems like the update broke something with the permissions. I’ve been reading through every thread on the forum where Plex won’t start and has the status “Manually Stopped” and on one occasion ChuckPA suggested resetting/reforcing the permissions to be applied at the root level of PlexMediaServer and applied to all subfolders and files. After doing that I was able to start PMS and it kept running

I went immediately to the web console and it gave error 503 with a sub status of “Database is currently being migrated”…no idea why that would be happening?
And then after a few minutes I was able to gain access to the web console proper. I appear to have lost the movies I added yesterday (they no longer appear in “Recently Added”, nor can I find them via search), but at least I’m further along the way than I was before…

did you confirm the movies are gone from your actual movie folder? or PMS just can’t seen them. If they lose access during a scan and you have “empty trash” as an automatic scheduled task then it will delete them as it thinks they no longer exist. if they are there and plex can’t see then just rerun the permissions for the media folder similar to what you did for the plexmediaserver folder.

Do you mean scheduled tasks in the Synology control panel? If so, then I only 2 SMART tests of the disks in there, nothing else…so should be all good?
A rescan of the library has completed and I can watch movies again…

i was referring to the recently added movies that you said you could no longer locate. If your system is working then it is good to go. i wouldn’t worry about anything else.

Have checked the trash on the films library and seems like there is nothing in there…so thanks for the advice and seems like it’s ok now!

This is VERY disconcerting.

Permissions inside the PlexMediaShared folder will only break when:

  1. Media is placed there (manually or by automated tools)
  2. Plug-ins manually installed incorrectly.

I can give you the commands for Task Scheduler to fix it but would like to know how it got broken because DSM itself maintains the top-most level control.

Given the date/time of the logs is way off, I believe preventative maintenance should be done to return the shared folder to a known-good state.

Here’s the FAQ to confirm PlexMediaServer permissions (inside the shared folder) are correct.

@ya851 Thanks for the log files. They did not show any issues. Just wanted to make sure there was not some major database corruption or something similar keeping Plex from running.

@ChuckPa Thanks for jumping on the thread.
