DSM 6 -> DSM 7 Migration

I think I have a similar problem. I updated to DMS 7, the Plex Media Server is installed and running fine, but I couldn’t find it on Authorized units in the Plex, only the old DMS 6 version. I removed it and now I don’t see it, I do not even know how to get to the Claim server promt, I just to seem to get that option. Please help!

I am not getting the Server option under Settings in the Plex TV app. I get my account on top, then Plex Web, but no Server option

@lange911

If you are upgrading from DSM 6 → DSM 7, due to Synology mandated changes, there is now a procedure for you to do.

Before doing anything else, Do you still have “Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server” (shared folder and the DSM 6 server) ?

Thanks Chuck for replying,

No, since I already have made the update, I have the PlexMediaServer/Appdata/PlexMediaServer ie different names for the folder Appdata as it is in DSM 7.

/Jesper

Did you Migrate the server from DSM 6 → DSM 7 or did you “nuke it and start over” ?
( Asking so I can make certain to keep your old library sections, etc if you wanted )

As for getting the server to show up, let’s do a few things.

  1. Stop PMS
  2. FileStation → PlexMediaServer / AppData / Plex Media Server
  3. Right-Click Logs → Compress to Logs.zip
  4. Download that ZIP and attach here.

Let’s try to confirm it’s claimed ok.

Easy steps – With pictures :slight_smile: lol

Hi, no I didn’t “nuke” it :), it was an orderly update of the software. Please try to save as much as possible of library and other settings.

Logs.zip (275.2 KB)

Here is the Log.zip

Hi Chuck, did you see my reply, I attached the log.zip

What are the next steps?

@lange911

Do not use Synology quickconnect to login to Plex Media Server. When the server is unclaimed, such attempts are considered remote and are rejected.

Instead, connect directly to the IP address of the server: http://192.168.68.136:32400/web.

Also, did you run FAQ 31 as Chuck recommended?

If not, do so. It will claim the server.

If the process fails, report back with any error message, error code, etc. and a fresh set of log files.

If the process succeeds, report back whether or not you can see your libraries. If not, do not delete anything, uninstall PMS, etc. The DSM 6 → DSM 7 migration process may not have completed correctly and some additional steps are necessary.

Hi,

I can’t connect with the IP address, it says “can’t find server” when attempting in Safari/iPhone and it says the IP address “refused to connect” through Edge-browser

I will try the FAQ 31 in the mean time

Thanks,

Jesper (lange911)

Hi again,

I succeeded in logging into Synology server through IP address (find.synology.com). I succeeded in reinstalling and it is confirmed CLAIMED. Now I try to open my PLEX TV, it identifies the NAS server, but has no libraries, and PLEX now asks me to 1. Add Library or 2. Scan Library files and below has a box for Merge Recently added Items

@lange911

If you go to Settingsserver_name → Libraries (not Library), are any libraries listed?

Also, is the /Plex shared folder still present on the NAS?

If yes, are the database files still present in
/Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Databases?

If they are, please include a screenshot from Synology File Station showing the full file names and their dates.

Apologies if some of this has been asked before. Just trying to figure out what does and does not exist on your server.

Hi,

I am attaching two screenshots; one of the Plex settings/Library, which seems to NOT show any Libraries. Second, a screenshot from the link on my NAS/Synology/Plex Media Server

Regards,

Jesper

I moved your posts to a new thread.

Thanks for the screenshots.

It appears you updated the NAS from DSM 6 to DSM 7 on 24 August (the date on the database files in the screenshot).

This is when your libraries disappeared, correct?

Your Plex server, as it existed on 24 Aug, is still there, in the /Plex shared folder.

It can be recovered if you wish.

However, your current Plex server will be deleted during the recovery process. It is not possible to merge servers. Any media files added since 24 Aug will be rediscovered, but any metadata edits, collections, etc. will be lost.

If you wish to recover the old server, see this post: Struggling with migration from DSM 6 to DSM7 - #2 by FordGuy61. It outlines the recovery process.

Read it over and write back with any questions.

Hi again, and Thanks!

I think I understand it all, and have the old /Plex and the new/Plex Media Server folders, so I should be good to go. I have two questions though:

  1. Where on Plex.tv do I find the right Plex Media server for installation (I have always used the one through the package center, but that should not be used as I understand it)
  2. Under point 7, bullet 3, you mention “claim the server”, but not really how, only how not. Is that through the same process you had me do the other day, your previous instruction in this thread?

/Jesper

Before you start the migration, make sure the NAS is synchronized with a public NTP server.

Login to the NAS → Synology Control Panel → Regional Options → Time tab

Time Setting = Synchronize with public NTP server, pick one from the list, and Update.

You should have Status = Normal.

This does two things: a) ensures the NAS time is correct, and b) provides a basic test of Internet connectivity. Both necessary for claiming to work.

You could use the version in Package Center (1.41.5). However, it is outdated, so you need to update to the current version (1.42.1) after migrating.

plex.tv/downloads

For a DS218play (Realtek RTD1296 CPU), You’ll want the ARMv8 version for DSM 7.2.2+

https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-media-server-new/1.42.1.10060-4e8b05daf/synology-dsm72/PlexMediaServer-1.42.1.10060-4e8b05daf-aarch64_DSM72.spk

The same. Point a private/incognito browser window at the IP address of the server, http://192.168.68.136:32400/web.

The incognito window bypasses any browser plug-ins such as cookie blockers from interfering with the process. After claiming you can use a regular browser window.

Hi again!

It seems to have worked; I have the libraries in plex, I can view movies from Pc Windows, iPhone and Apple TV!

Thanks, you have been awesome!
