I set my router to use the default DNS servers for my ISP, shut down the NAS, unplugged the router, unplugged the modem, then reversed the operations in the opposite order.
I restarted PMS and had no change. I took a look at the network errors in the log and verified that I can resolve the names on the servers:

I have about the simplest networking available – two Ethernet ports on the NAS are bonded and set to fixed IP address 192.,168.1.10, which is reserved on the router. The NAS has gateway set to 192.168.1.1 and default DNS.
I am very confused.
Here is the latest set of logs.
Oops. Hit the wrong button. Trying to upload log, but I get a failure at 80-95% done. Is there a size limit?
I recently updated to Version 1.24.2.4973 on DSM 7 and now I see a new PlexMediaServer share in my list of shared folders. I had previously read that the Plex share was no longer needed so I removed it. Can I remove this new PlexMediaServer shared folder or has something changed and now a dedicated shared folder is required in DSM 7?
Synology NAS DS916+
Current DSM version: DSM 7.0-41890
Plex Media Server version: 1.24.2.4973
If you look back at my discussion above with Trumpy, he says the new PlexMediaServer folder is now where data for plex is stored. So you shouldn’t remove this.
The old Plex folder and plex user can be removed, check out our discussion above.
Whoa… Setting DNS manually on the NAS to 8.8.8.8 did it. Thanks a lot for the help. Um – that is sort of confusing that it worked. I didn’t even get a chance to redo the bonding.
I have attempted the Plex upgrade on DSM 7 on my DS920+. I did the DSM upgrade last night. I had no idea Plex was going to be so much trouble. It’s version 1.24.2.4973.
Bottom line is that there are no error messages but the migration has failed. All of my files remain in the original Plex folder. Plex Media Server contains the App Data, but no media.
I have checked permissions multiple times, and they are correct. I have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times as well.
I’m going to try and look at the logs, but if someone knowledgeable could reach out, I’d really appreciate it… Thank you.
I have placed no media or anything else manually into the PlexMediaServer folder. I have read the document over and over a few times now. While I acknowledge that I may have missed something, I believe I have followed the instructions.
All of my media still sits in the original Plex folder. I am under the impression that the installation procedure will automatically move my media into the PlexMediaServer folder.
I’ve been using Plex for sometime, and I certainly understand that you are not supposed to put media files directly into the PlexMediaServer folder, or into the AppData folder. I am quite familiar with those multilingual warnings.
My issue is that my media folders (e.g. Movies, TV Shows, etc.) remain in my pre-upgrade Plex folder, unmigrated, even though I have attempted the migration several times now.
Wow. I feel stupid; I’ve been running a Plex server for years, and I assumed that those warnings meant not to put the media files IN the Plex folder, and to use subfolders.
I am happy to move them. I have a couple of questions before I do: Is this going to break my existing metadata? Do I need to do more than just move them?
Currently all located in /Plex/Movies, /Plex/TV Shows, etc.
I just tried copying one of the smaller folders (it’s copying now), and I was going to retry to the install. If you’ve got a better approach, I’d love to hear it. Thank you!
(Off to bed for tonight – back on this tomorrow… Thank you!)
If you have a “Plex/Movies” and “Plex/TV Shows”, everything at the top level,
then your media can stay right there.
In DSM 6 – which is where those warnings came from – Media in the Plex share was very dangerous because folks would make mistakes selecting which folders to add to their library sections. That’s why I placed those warnings and made that general rule. Media can be anywhere on the NAS – it didn’t need to be there and shouldn’t have been.
There is ONE place your media cannot be – That’s in the “Plex Media Server” sub-folder. If it’s in there, you’ll lose it.
In DSM 7, we leave the Plex share and take “Plex Media Server” to its new home.
That means you are free to use the Plex share as you see fit.
The initial DSM 7 package stored the metadata internally to DSM.
I figured out how to bring that data back out so we can make backups of it.
You can see that now as of PMS 1.24.4973 - and above (can’t go back to lower versions after this because of the structure change).
Have you seen these posts?
Where I describe all the changes AND the migration process.
I’ve upgraded my Synology to DMS7 but unfortunately i did so before finding the guide for upgrading Plex so i did not uninstall the old version before upgrading the DSM. When i installed the new version of Plex (1.24.3.5033-7000) i did follow the guide to the best of my abilities but something when wrong. It never migrated the old libraries or meta data. I can add a new library and that works just fine but i put a lot of work into my libraries.
I found this post where you asked about a Migration.log and i can not find one in my plex folders, neither in Plex nor PlexMediaServer.
What do i do now? Uninstall Plex and erase all data and retry? Will it keep the Plex folder if i do that?
Thanks for all the guides and links. I hadn’t found them when I first tried the migration so I installed w/o giving permissions to the original “Plex” share and gave them after (only to find out I had to do it before/during). I ended up uninstalling + erasing the DSM 7 installation and then reinstalled - library migration successful (I can access the server and see my library as it was).
However, all files are Unavailable (even though the paths are right). I’ve triple checked my permissions and they all had R/W permission for PlexMediaServer. I even tried adding Admin permission to some of my media folders, but that’s also not working (see image).
Is there something else I’m missing? Do I need to rescan the libraries? (I’m afraid of the unavailable files disappearing if the scan still can’t find them).
Installed DSM7 version: 1.24.5.5173-700
The PlexMediaServer share and NAS share (media in subfolders therein) are both on Volume 1.
I never gave permissions to PlexMediaServer through the Shared Folder interface (which you tell me to remove in Step 1)- just on the individual media folders (which you tell me to add on Step 2).
I just tried removing permissions on one of the individual media folders via File Station, saving, then re-adding them and saving again. Progress bar popped up and disappeared rather quickly, but still no availability of files. I made sure to check Apply this folder, sub-folders and files for both steps.
