DTS-HD HRA 7.1 Audio Not Working

I have the same question

Same problem with HRA here with Plex on Shield TV Pro 2019 to Pioneer VSX-LX303.
Same problem on MX Player Pro.
Same problem on SPMC.
VLC Player works fine with HRA.
Kodi also works fine.

I am waiting so a long time, more than an Year for a fix, but Plex do nothing about this problem.

Plex on Android TV use Exoplayer. It seems the Emby team found a fix for this issue in Exoplayer :

https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/90201-dts-hd-hra-71/

Could Plex team implement a fix too ?

So we have to wait for a fixed Exoplayer in Plex, that comes from Emby for Android TV 1.8.36g.
Many thanks o_spring / Audiomixer for your persistence.

On this link. I only had a problem with emby not playing a DTS-HD HRA whereas plex, Kodi, mrmc played them correctly. Emby solved their issue for me using my denon x4500. I have learned one thing over the years and that is no one program will play everything and so the reason I have multiple players as there will be one player that works. I do submit samples where I can when I have issues.

I have the issue with the same sample files (see few post before). My Onkyo Tx-NR656 shows DTS instead of DTS Hi Res and I have no sound (or very very low inintelligible sound). Kodi with the plex plug-in does not have the problem. MX player do have the same problem however.

o_spring, exact the same here with Pioneer VSX-LX303.

audiomixer, I don’t know why the denon works with plex, but your Emby problem sounds like our problem, too.
So we have a good chance for help with Exoplayer from 1.8.36g.
Your stocking, play, stocking, play problem i have sometimes too with Exoplayer in Plex for Android 8.8.0.21167-beta but I use USB3 Harddrive on Shield with HDMI2.1 Cable to QLED TV.
But with jump in Movie or Shield restart also sometimes it works fine. Here I hope for 1.8.36g, too.

Edit:
Found Plex for Android 8.8.0.21200 but problem wasn’t fixed.

Oh, that sounds awesome, to begin with. Many thanks to the emby guys!
Hopefully, the plex dev team will fix the exoplayer as soon as they can.

Just a small word on Kodi. It is expected to work, they don“t use exoplayer and fixed it in their player engine a long time ago.

( I had a chat with the Nvidia support, but I think they don’t understand what the issue is or don’t want to… answer from them was just ā€œnot supportedā€ - so, unfortunately, no chance that they will get involved)

New Plex Beta 8.8.1.21331 available.

Problem wasn’t fixed :((

We do not know if the plex team has acknowledged this problem… @DaveBinM could you have a look to this topic ?

Same issue on Google Chromecast TV

ā€œAn error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try againā€

I don’t have a sample of DTS-HD HRA 7.1 to try, but I’ve tried DTS-HD HRA 5.1 with my 2019 Shield Pro with passthrough both enabled and disabled, and in both situations, I had audio and video playback as expected. If anyone has a sample of a 7.1 file they could share, it’d be much appreciated. https://support.plex.tv/articles/201035968-generating-sample-files-from-media/

EDIT: I got some 7.1 samples, and they work for me too. If people have particular files that are problems, I’d very much appreciate a sample of those

Hi !!

I am happy to see someone of plex team looking into this problem

In fact every DTS HRA file I have tried I have the problem.

Here is one among many : http://s1.demo-world.eu/hd_trailers.php?file=dts_orchestra_short_lossless-DWEU.mkv

I think that not every AV receiver is experiencing the problem. Mine is Onkyo TX-NR656. But there are others (pionner, denon seems to be affected too). I have the impression that the metadata that come along with the audio is wrongly interpreted and the AV receiver is using a DTS core dƩcoder instead of the DTS High Res decoder : DTS mode is on on on my receiver while playing but sound is imperceptible (some very low noise only)

Kodi with plex plug-in is playing fine these file with passthrough activated. They seems to have found the fix. MPV player team and Emby player team seems to have found a fix too.

Hmmm, I tried that sample and my HEOS Bar played it okay, and registered it as DTS-HD

Also, sorry I missed your last ping. Oct 28th is my wedding anniversary, so I was away then

Late happy birthday then

Did you read this emby thread :
https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/90201-dts-hd-hra-71/

They seems to found the issue… they use Exoplayer too on the shield TV it seems…

By the way My Android TV device is a Shield TV pro 2019 on the latest firmware but this problem is very old and I already had this on my former shield TV 2017

And here is a (old) thread about this on Kodi forum :

Yeah, our version of ExoPlayer is not quite vanilla, but we should be updating to a newer version in future

Maybe the patch they made could be merged back to the version plex currently use ?

I have experienced mainly older receivers and non-standard avr systems (like soundbars) seem to be fine with how dts-hd hra is streamed right now. Newer receivers don’t like it, as they, I assume, implement it differently. (correctly… as dts:X can be on top of dts-hd hra and can be decoded by these newer receivers, something which is not supported on older systems, to support dts:X/hra, dts changed their ā€œreferenceā€ implementation)

Just for reference (i know exoplayer is different)
Kodi fix:

LavFilter fix: https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/commit/3ec0521e8aa68047c08fa9d518327e6fd36c827d#diff-e1ffa31aeefb8e676b951cf6a637605d58667636b9f4684d11fecfb69776d702

Hmmm, I was under the impression that DTS:X was built upon DTS-HD MA, not DTS-HD HRA, which is an older, lower bitrate HD audio codec. While my soundbar doesn’t support DTS:X or Atmos, it does support DTS-HD codecs, and TrueHD (and down mixes as needed). It’s a fairly new model (had it 3 years) made by Denon.
