DTS-HD HRA 7.1 Audio Not Working

You are right. DTS:X is built upon DTS-HD, which includes Master Audio and High-Resolution Audio. And yes DTS-HD HRA is a low bitrate dts-hd codec variant, but DTS:X can still be on top of it. It is exactly like Dolby Digital + and TrueHD both can have the Atmos Metadata, where DD+ is the low bitrate codec for bitrate constrained environments. (Like for those international discs, where you have all the languages on one UHD bluray). The DTS:X/HRA specification must be fairly new, the only discs that had such an track are fairley new. (2017) (for example, Fast and Forius 7 UHD -> the german audio track is dts:X (HRA)) Some receivers had problems decoding such a dts:X - hra track… (german article https://surround-sound.info/news/mumie-trilogie-deutscher-dtsx-ton-mit-dts-hd-high-resolution-als-basis-9424/)

If you like I could add some logs when I“m home again.

I hope this helps

After digging around the various links, it seems we should be sending DTS-HD HRA as 2 channels. Sadly though I’ve been unable to replicate the problem with the team, as it always comes through to our AVR as 7.1 with the samples we have.

I’ve made a build that should behaviour in the same way as Kodi or MPV, if you could give it a try and let me know if this fixes the lack of sound with DTS-HD HRA.

Hello,

I have just side loaded the apk and I have still the issue. My Onkyo TX-NR656 AVR still switch to DTS mode but with no info about the audio format (when pressing the info button of the AVR) and with no sound (or imperceptible)

Test done with the DTS HRA demo file linked in this topic.

PS: now that I have side loaded a special plex build, how to revert to the normal release channel of the store ?

And I followed this test by playing the file with VLC for Android TV in passthrough mode and it works like in Kodi : the AVR shows Ā« DTS high Res Ā» when pressing info and I have sound.

Many thanks for your work but unfortunately it does not work on my system either, the avr just shows non-working dts as before :frowning:

Unfortunately, due to being closed source, we can not see what you have changed. :frowning:
Can you summarize what you have changed in the code? 2ch@192kHz and also the in mpv so-called ā€œdtshd_rateā€? Which is specific to dts-hd ma (768000) and dts-hd hra (192000)?

Something to note, which should I correct/revise now after a chat with @Achilles.

ā€œI have experienced mainly older receivers and non-standard avr systems (like soundbars) seem to be fine with how dts-hd hra is streamed right now. Newer receivers don’t like it, as they, I assume, implement it differently.ā€

=> Mainly avr systems and soundbar solutions with ā€œCirrus Logicā€ decoders seem to be affected.

The change was just to the information that is given to the passthrough decoder on Android, after finding the code for the decoder though it seems the information isn’t used. Sadly the mpv patch can’t just be applied as we rely on the Android passthrough support rather than doing it ourselves.

The dtshd_rate adjusts the ā€œboundariesā€ on the packet which will be the next step for me to try, though it shouldn’t really be necessary and comes with it’s own set of concerns.

I’m not sure it’s a modern AVR vs older ones, one I have is from 2020 and the other from 2017 and both play DTS HD HRA as 7.1 surround sound. It could be a bug on a specific chipset used.

When DTS HD HRA works on your AVR with a different app, are you getting sound in stereo or is it using multiple channels still?

oh okay, many thanks for trying to fix it!

What avr devices do you have?
Higher-end avr devices (regardless of age) tend to not use these Cirrus Logic decoders, which could explain why you arenĀ“t experiencing this. (they mostly use ā€œAnalog Devices SHARC processorsā€ or Texas Instruments ones)

On my system, when I try to play dts-hd hra through Kodi it comes out as multi-channel. (same channels as source)

Hi,

On my Shield TV 2019 Pro both Kodi (plex plug-in) and VLC are outputting surround sound and DTS HRA 7.1 is detected as input on my AVR

Thanks for your implication on this subject.

Hi,

Any news on the subject ?

Hi, I’m experiencing the same behavior for me, my avr is a denon s750h. When playing a movie with an DTS-HD HRA 7.1 track my reiceiver don’t even detect the audio and stay with the stereo of the shield. When playing the same movie through kodi, the avr detect it and play it as a dts:x track. While i’m here i experienced a problem with another movie wich as an dts hd ma 7.1 track and plex think it’s an dca track and can’t passthrough it to my avr and transcode it.

hope you’ll find a solution

sorry for my english i’m french

I see DTS-HD which plays as DTS-X on my Samsung Soundbar. I’m not seeing ā€œDTS-HD HRAā€
What version Plex you on?

i’m on #### 1.21.3.4046 for the server and for the shied pro up to date i imagine i’ll verifie later.
I’m on 8.13.0.22986 on the shield tv pro

On Shield 2017/ Samsung Soundbar ( supports all audio), I tried the DTS-HD HRA 7.1 sample in Plex and it played as 5.1, so the Soundbar didn’t detect it as DTS-X.

good to know, thanks for testing. yesterday i tried two other movies through kodi both on dts-hd hra 7.1 and both of them where identified by my avr as dtsx but directly from plex app nothing at all no oudio output besides stereo from the shield. And i’m on the 2019 one. it’s not a big deal but i do think plex ad-ons for kodi isn’t as good as the plex app in terms of graphic and comodity usage.

Are you sure it is DTS-X ? And not DTS Neural:X (applied by your decider to DTS HRA), witch is a post decoding audio traitement to upmix audio to ceiling or up-firing speakers ?

See DTS Neural:X et Dolby Surround : les nouveaux post-traitements de Dolby et DTS - Le blog de Son-VidƩo.com

A lot of home-cinema dƩcoder have theses post-traitements enabled by default.

i’ll check next week but could be it. Again it’s not what bothering me but more the fact that plex app on the shield tv pro 2019 do not output any audio when an DTS-HD hra track is selected, unless it’s in fact a limitation of my decoder and in that’s case i’ll go check on the settings as well. Thanks for the input. By the way the problem has been solved for you ?

No, this still an open issue for my setup (Shield 2019 pro + Onkyo TX-NR656 AVR)

Same issue here (Shield Pro 2019 & Denon X3500H)
