I see there have been a few threads regarding 5gHz wireless, but I cannot seem to find any that answer the bottom-line question: Has anybody been successful with using a dual-band 2.4gHz/5gHz wireless USB adapter on RasPlex?
I had my previous condo all hard-wired up, but I sold that place, and I am now renting a condo. I can’t go routing CAT6 through the walls here, so I am unfortunately stuck with wireless for all my devices. Anything on 2.4gHz performs HORRIBLY (unusable) in this place, but all my dual-band devices are getting 600Mbit or better.
Back to the question at hand… has anybody successfully used dual band with RasPlex? If so, what adapter are you using? Did it require a powered USB hub?
I believe the only way to get a RasPlex working on my downstairs TV is with dual-band, so I would like to know what others have found.
Use a separate wireless network adapter, basically a wireless AP in reverse (many APs/routers can be configured this way). You get all the functionality and don’t have to worry about drivers as the Pi just sees it as a wired connection on the existing RJ45 port.
Hi sremick, and thank you for the suggestion. Buying another AP/router sounds like a bit more money than I would like to spend.
I have read a few sites suggesting the Netis N600 will work on RPi, but I cannot find any references to its use with RasPlex. Has anybody tried this? It uses the Ralink RT5572 Chipset which is said to be supported by RPi according to THIS.

Well you’re already looking at buying an adapter $20-30, which is the price range of many routers. If you do research, you very well might be able to find a dual-band router that supports wireless client mode in your price range.
I have an Edimax EW-7811UTC. It is dual band and works well. When i originally put in my key and set it up it did error but then worked fine after anyway.
I’ve found that it’s not always just about the wifi dongle you use though… your wifi router has to be good as well. I have Asus RT-AC66U which is a great router and good at wifi.
