I bought plex pass, then bought the WinTV-quadhd, and sucks cause didnt know that isnt supported by DVB-S. But I found WinTV-NOVA-HD-USB2 which IS supported by DVB-S/S2 but is it supported by plex?
Satellite TV is not officially supported by Plex at all.
You can try it, but there are several difficulties to overcome:
- Plex may wait not long enough for some LNBs to properly initialise themselves (they are usually only powered up when you start watching, which may take too long, So Plex may lose its patience before that.)
- There is no support for more complex DiseqC configurations
- it may be difficult to obtain a complete EPG lineup
However in some, more sophisticated setups you may be able to use SAT TV.
I for instance am using the DVBviewer Media Server to interface with my Digital Devices DVB-S2 PCI card. the DVBviewer server then emulates a SAT>IP device which in turn can be used by Plex.
Other people are using tvheadend as an intermediary software.
I canāt and I wonāt, because as I said already above: SAT is not offically supported yet by Plex.
The card I would recommend to you may not work at all due to unforeseen circumstances with your setup. I wonāt take that responsibility.
The card has 2 tuners, so it requires 2 cables from the LNB (which in turn must be a multi-user LNB if you want to use both tuners simultaneously.)
This is different from terrestrial or cable tuners, which simply use the same antenna connector for all their onboard tuners.
With Sat, this is not possible, because each tuner must configure the LNB directly and set the frequency range and polarisation to use, in order to receive a particular transponder.
(There exist special LNBs, which support Unicable but I donāt have the best experiences with this technology, so I cannot recommend it)
Then you can only use one of the two tuners.
The alternative is to switch out the LNB. There are Duo and Quad LNBs available for not very much money.
Are you the owner of the dish, or is it supplied by your landlord?
The additional conmnectors should be used if the card has to actually power the LNB.
Which might not be the case for you, since there is actually no dish or there is a so-called Multi-Switch in use which powers the LNBs.
Are you sure that you have Sat at all? This is not a cable connection?
Ah, OK this clears that up.
Did they tell you for how many receivers/tvs this plug in the wall is usable?
As I explained above: a single sat tv connection can only be used by one tuner.
So unless they implemented āUnicableā (which of course costs more money), then you are restricted to one tuner.
So you can either watch live tv or record, but not both at the same time.
Im pretty sure its unicable then, as it was originally used for Sky Box, and i was able to watch and record multiple stuff
I can only find german documentation about these Sky boxes. Around here, they do indeed support Unicable.
But Iām not sure if Sky use the same technology in different countries.
Yeah idk
Anyhow, if I were to buy a SAT/DVB-S/S2 tuner, and set it all up on my PC
To my understanding, Plex wont be able to use the signal, but using other programs, plex can then use it?
Why do you use DVBviewer Media Server instead of tvheadend that I see referenced a lot more around here? Whats the difference?
Also you mentioned EPG data might be a trouble, and yeah it probably will be, ive had trouble getting EPG data before. For ex my actual TV can use the cable, but its UI is trash, and the EPG only updates and shows data if I hover over the channel, and it only gets either the currently on, or currently on + next up. but never anything further and the hovering over thing to show whats on, is SO annoying.
Do you have issues with EPG?
It will actually try to use it, but it may fail when doing so. Has to do with the above mentioned time-outs when dealing with sat hardware.
DVBviewer is what I had a license for anyway.
And my server uses Windows. I understand that tvheadend runs on Linux.
If I wanted to use all channels available on Sat, Iād certainly would miss some of them due to no EPG data.
But I asked myself: āDo I really watch these channels? Or are they just nice to have?ā Since my answers were No, Yes I didnāt bother with these channels.
I was able to select the channel lineup of a local cable provider which has most of the channels I use.
In extreme cases you have to use external EPG providers, which allow you to mix and match from a wide range of sources. But of course they charge you for these data, and you then have to import their XMLTV files into Plex.
But it is possible to import EPG data into Plex? Also, yeah, I just ordered a Happauge device (same one as the one I already have, but the one I have supports DVB-T or something only, whereas the one I ordered for 102Ā£ supports DVB-T and S/S2 e.t.c)
So, I looked into it, and apparently yes, tvheadend is linux and such, it would be so OP if there were a tvheadend/dvb media server like solution that worked on an android tv, that way I wouldnt need any tuner card at all lmao
So once this pcie tuner arrives, hop in my LNB (which I guess my cable is LNB as the Top cable in the PCIE tuner, is the same connection type as my cable)
So I then set it up with DVB Media Server (Windows) and then link that to Plex somehow? Alrighty lol
Thanks for the help.
I have seen some issues reported in the forums with these all-in-one cards.
But I donāt remember anymore if it was do when you want to use all of the tuner types at once or something else.
Careful and reserve the right to send it back!
Back again, so I have the tuner setup and the bundled software is working, I can see the channels, but, with DVBViewer, how do I setup the SAT->IP? I see no option for it. Im on the Demo right now, mainly as I dont use paypal so its a bit hard to buy the full version.
The SAT>IP functionality is a part of āDVBviewer Media Serverā and requires a paid license.
Wait so I have to pay 20 euro for the app and 19 euro more for the media server plugin?
Just paid 20 euro for the app, please dont tell me I gotta shell out another 19 euro

Thatās how it works, yes.
Ok I paid another 19, waiting on email for the server addon, but, once it arrives, how would I link it with Plex?
