Dvb-s2 uk

Dear All,

I have done a bunch of searching and on one of the plex support pages it says something about not supporting satellite. However, i managed to make my satellite tuner work jsut fine in the past on plex and actually plex gets quite far through the process, asking me about diseqc settings and polarisation. however when the tuning completes it finds no channels. so i guess i had two questions:

  1. will satellite work in the uk if i get the setting right?
  2. if not is there a workaround using tvheadend etc?

Mnay thanks

I’m having the exact same issue! /have an Hauppauge WinTV Nova S2 tuner and although the software that came with the tuner can pick up channels, when trying to tune channels on Plex I get nothing although I know I am selecting the right satellite. Will wait for any answers that might come through.

Cheers for the reply, i am currently looking at tvheaded and setting it up as an ip tv service. however i couldnt get any signal from my card in tv headend so im begining to think its bust. might be time for a new card. i will keep this up to date.

I have two WinTv Nova S2 tuners that are currently connected to a Raspberry Pi and both work fine. There are a couple of hoops you have to jump through though to get them working correctly. Firstly if you are running your server on Linux and your Nova S2 is hardware version BAH9, bought in the last 3 years or so, then there is a bug / misconfiguration in the kernel driver and you have to patch the kernel or download the source, fix the bug and then compile a custom kernel. Secondly the transponder information for satellite on Plex is about 8 years out of date. You need to download a new ini file from kingofsat and copy it to the correct location in the Plex folder structure. Plex should then find all the channels. Though they are slow to update their lineup so some will be missing. For example DMax +1 is still tagged as protected and can’t be tuned. But it has been free to air for years.

I’m running Windows 11, and Plex finds the tuner no problem. Drivers are up to date. I’ve updated the ini files from Kingofsat, but still no luck. The WinTV that came with the tuner picks up channels no problem, so it’s definitely some configuration in Plex, but can’t figure out what. Any other suggestions would be highly appreciated!

Is your tuner the WinTv-Nova-HD-S2 pci card or the WinTv-Nova-S2 USB stick? I have both, so might be able to do some testing with the PCI card or the USB stick in Windows, if I can find a motherboard with PCI slots. Think I have one in the loft.

It’s the USB stick. With wintv I pick the Astra satellite 28.2 East (I’m in Portugal) to pick up the British channels and it picks them up. In Plex I put the satellite and tried different combinations of the other two options for tuning, but no result. Thanks very much!

You’re well outside the range of the spot beams for the UK on 28.2E, however if the WinTv software can receive a signal I’d presume Plex should be able to as well. Unless the WinTv software has better intergration with the drivers and can adjust the gain of the tuner or something. Guessing as I have never used the WinTv software. We could compare your Plex settings to mine. For scanning channels on Plex I have the three selections set to 28.2E, none, and Ku-Linear(universal). Does this match your settings?

I’ve got a big dish. I also have a tv with satellite tuner and picks up the channels no problem. I want to get the channels in other rooms where I don’t have a satellite cable, but I’m stumped. I use Plex back in the UK with Freeview and never found this problem. I’ve tried the same settings as you have and others and get no results. It quickly does a scan for channels but finds nothings. I’m at a loss.

So I installed WinTv and Plex Server onto one of my Windows 11 PC’s and moved one of my S2 dongles to that machine. WinTv tuned in no problem, Plex could not find any channels. Thought maybe the WinTv service was locking out the tuner, disabled that, no difference. So I uninstalled WinTv, no difference. I rolled the WinTv drivers back to some from 2020. No difference. Then I had an idea. I’m not sure if I can mention 3rd party software here so I’ll pm you my solution. Currently scanning 28.2E on Plex with this workaround.

Great, thanks! Will wait to get your message, as nothing came through yet.

So I thought this was working as it said it was scanning the channels, which took about 10 minutes. But it didn’t, well not properly and it wouldn’t tune into anything. Spent the last 3 hours trying to figure it out. Can’t figure why it is not working as I had this working before on another PC with a different satellite card. Though as the software sits between the hardware and Plex the type of card shouldn’t matter. Unless something has changed in Plex since I last did this. You could setup a plx server on a Raspberry Pi, though you would need to recompile the kernel but it does work as I said before I have two of these dongles in a Pi and it works fine.

Thanks very much for trying to help! It’s a really odd one. I am thinking of trying to run Ubuntu, but not overly familiar with it. I did try it a couple of weeks ago, but Plex wouldn’t recognise the tuner. Will need to get some time to go through it all. Thanks!

If you tried Plex on Ubuntu before and it didn’t recognise the tuner then it sounds like you have one of the newer Nova-S2’s, so the kernel needs patched. I’ll pm you the link where I got the info that allowed me to patch my Pi’s kernel. The thread is specifically about Ubuntu so should hopefully be easy to follow
