This post is directed more to the developers in regards to DVR. Before I start, I do want to say how much I like Plex. I appreciate the work that has been done on it, and that it is offered for free to those who want it, and for those who are willing to pay for it, they are rewarded with extra features; like DVR. I used the free version for a year or two before making the plunge over a year ago to Plex Pass.
Previous to the DVR feature, I used Tablo for the past few years. However, once Plex was made to support Roku, I decided to remove Tablo and purchase a Hdhomerun Extend and use Plex to receive and record my local TV. My hopes were/are that Plex would provide a better DVR solution than Tablo; which for the most part, has been a somewhat acceptable solution.
Let me provide some background on my hardware/software setup. I’m running a Synology DS415+ NAS running DSM 6.1.4-15217. The Hdhomerun Extend is used as my tuner, and I mostly use Roku XS for my Player. My network backbone is a 1GB backbone with hardwired Ethernet connections to the Roku devices and two 1GB connections to the NAS.
Since I’ve been running with this new setup, I’ve experienced constant issues (50%+ of the time), which appears to correlate to the record function.
Problem #1 is I will be watching a show (either live and while it is being recorded, or just watching a previously recorded show), and all of a sudden, the audio track becomes offset to the video track, and it will loop every couple of seconds. If I exit the Plex app and go back into it to either pick up where I left off, or restart the show, the problem is still there. The recorded show, either became corrupted while I was watching it, or it was recorded during the record function, but either way, the show has become totally unwatchable and has to be deleted from the DVR. If it was a live show, then that show becomes totally unwatchable. Sometimes I can change the channel to watch another network program, but sometimes I just have to exit the DVR function of Plex altogether and watch something else on Plex.
Problem #2 is sometimes I will be watching live TV, and the video will start to glitch every few seconds (like a half second pause). The audio doesn’t glitch; only the video. If I change channels, the problem goes away.
I experience these issues on all of my Roku devices (8 of them), so the problem isn’t tied to any particular Roku device.
I really want Plex DVR to work. My thought was that Plex DVR would, can and will be much more than Tablo ever was. I know that support for Roku just recently started a couple of months ago, so I realize not everything is going to be perfect right out of the gate. If the developers would like, I’m more than willing to beta test any new changes you have.
