DVR & Live TV Completely broken in 1.13.8.5395 with WinTV dualHD and probably others

@sa2000 Same issues as before but this time with Plex Media Player under Ubuntu where the TV channels time out with a “Playback Error” over a Wifi Network or WAN/Broadband connection. Hope you can see the issue in the logs?

Dave

I have gone through the first set of logs which covered period 04;29 am to 10:09 am on December 2nd.

There were 3 livetv sessions during this period. All 3 were for channel 5 and all from the same wan IP for user Ollie through Plex Media Player.

Tune 1 at 08:51:08 am

This actually timed out with the 10 second time out i mentioned that came into 1.14.0.5465. However the evidence is not conclusive that it was solely down to this. There is no evidence that the tuner did actually start to provide Plex Media Server with any packets. It was re-attempted a few seconds later. See Tune 2

Tune 2 at 08:51:41 am

This tuned ok. At 08:51:59 switched to software transcoding as it failed to start hardware transcoding. The session active until user stopped it at 09:25:16 am.

Tune 3 at 09:25:40 am

This tuned ok. At 09:25:59 it switched to software transcoding due to failures to get hardware transcoding started. The session active until user stopped it at 10:00:15 am.

If there were any errors displayed remotely by Plex Media Player - then this is not something i would see in the Server logs unless there was a server error - and there was not.

Will need to have logs from the client app to see what it failed on. Also would need to know the time of the error.

If the issue is arising for both WAN and LAN then it would be best to concentrate on the LAN. Some logging in the server is now only there when verbose logging is enabled. But with verbose logs will fill up very quickly. Would need to increase the number of log files - to, say 40 - see preference LogNumFiles https://support.plex.tv/articles/201105343-advanced-hidden-server-settings/

For PMP logs - see https://support.plex.tv/articles/207338748-plex-media-player-logs/

Oh well, more digging on my clients machines, but tell me why I’ve looked at the logs and noticed that Plex opens all 6 tuners at the same time every 2 hours in the logs? I’ve since rebooted the server and all is working once again.
Sorry to say, but Plex is getting more complicated than ever, even for a severely sight impaired user like me, and there’s only so much that I can do… I may as well start looking at another server that works on all my devices and client devices, but guess what???

Ah… What I have to do even 7 days before my Girlfriend gives birth too…

Dave

Looked at the 2nd set of logs - which covered period 14:56 to 18:32 on 2nd December. There were 3 tunes - requests over local network from 192.168.0.19 - Plex Media Player being the client app.

Tune 1 at 15:44:12 - channel 12

tuned ok. playback shows some buffering and PMP requested cancellation of playback at 15:45:35. Presumably you stopped playback

Tune 2 at 15:46:01 - channel 3

Tuned ok. Playback ok at 15:55:58. PMP requested cancellation of playback at 15:56:08. Presumably you stopped playback

Tune 3 at 15:57:17 - channel 107

Tuned ok. Playback ok up to 18:30:12 when it was stopped

So would really need to know what and at what time were the issues - exact times and also would need verbose logging on the server so the individual requests form Plex Media Player can be seen) and this will need incrreasing the number of log files significantly and the Plex Media Player logs will be needed as well

It was on channel 107 that was stopped by Plex with a Playback Error and according to my users, the same happened with 3 & 12 also, PMP just gives the message that the antenna or tuner should be looked at. If you remember I had this issue using the browser, but now with PMP on all PC’s.
I’ll put verbose logging on this evening and even it happens again will download logs.

@sa2000 Hi, I hadn’t long turned Verbose Logging on when my Laptop on an HD Channel came up with “Playback Error”. The time it did it was around 19:30, so I hope these current logs help some more to get to the bottom of this error??

My Dad (Roku 3) was on at the same time streaming Live TV as well as my Girlfriend Michelle (Xbox) Playing something from one of the HDD’s. Playing Movies etc from the HDD’s isn’t affected, it’s just a Live TV issue, and it’s going to be recording hopefully from 20:00 this evening from BBC 4, unless the Transcoder has gone for a walk again?

I need to do some more testing & throw some logs on here. I have a network tuner (HDHomeRun Connect Duo), but what I’m seeing is Plex is not releasing the sessions in a timely manner. When you go to tune another channel, it’s taking up to 5 mins to release the recording session from the previous channel. That’s partly my issue is the server can only handle one stream at a time right now, so I try to get another channel up, i.e. channel surf & all hell breaks loose with PMS…

I’m getting hung up with the previous session and can’t tc the next channel. I’m also not sure if it’s releasing the tuner or not when the session hangs on.

@kmac1036 Well, my symptons seem to be the same, but I know my system should be able to handle more than 2 streams at a time, my latest logs I’ve just added to this thread for @sa2000 to browse through are as fresh as they come and there’s only myself and my girlfriend on the server, she’s watching “Are you being Served” from the Hard Drive, and I was watching a live stream. I was amazed that it carried on after a recording had finished at 9pm GMT, but one hour later it fell to it’s knee’s!!
I really do hope this issue can be fixed, other than adding “new” features to Plex first, it seems those using Live TV have had to wait ages for a fix, and as one user said there’s more to it than adding a 15 second timeout to the TV Tuner, in my eyes it’s a transcoding issue, I do hope I’m wrong though??
Oh for @sa2000 also, I know I said I wouldn’t be looking through my logs again, but I couldn’t resist and noticed every hour or so all 6 tuners are fired up, is this normal?

@mw0dcm the proc should support hardware transcode plus if you have a compatible nvidia card (encode only)… I’m going to try another round of testing and share my logs, see if that helps.

@kmac1036 The more the better!! I have a Nvidia GTX-750ti which I know handles the HW transcoding, and my cpu even with it’s age handles reasonably well, especially as I only do 720p and 1080p video’s anyway, and I have had up to 10 streams ticking away nicely once without the CPU screaming or the GPU at that matter.
Anyway, lets see if we can finally put the Live TV issues to bed so we can all enjoy Plex the way it should be??

Hi @sa2000
Here’s the logs from a “Playback Error” that happened over WAN with just my ex-wife and son watching his cartoons. They run Ubuntu 18.04LTS with PMP for Linux.

@sa2000 Here’s another Log dump that happened within the last 2 minutes, with just myself playing channel 107, I get this on screen to…

I will run it again on mh HP Elitebook 8440p using Ubuntu 18.04LTS with Plex Media Player and see how long it takes before it all falls down again on a different channel. The channel it fell on was 107 BBC News HD which is a 40Mbps channel here in the UK, I will run it on a SD channel and get back to you, but I know what the outcome is going to be!!

Plex Media (3.5 MB)

So this viewing the live tv channel for a while on Plex Media Player on 192.168.0.19 and then failed?

Could i have a look at the Plex Media Player logs directory please

There is still a problem with logging where i cannot see the Plex Media Player requests.

@sa2000 You have to remember, I’m not the only one on the server having the same issue, but I’ve got everyone to not use it till I’ve run tests. Which folder so I find these logs for PMP?

Dave

https://support.plex.tv/articles/207338748-plex-media-player-logs/

Your issue is failure during viewing livetv - sometime after starting.
The other issues i have been looking into from other users were to do with startup and tuning a channel

Does the playback issue you have only happen with livetv ?

It only happens with live TV, which is very strange, everyone of my users including myself don’t have issues streaming any other media from my server…

Hope this narrows it down?

Dave

I have looked through for the logs for Plex Media Player high and low and cannot find any, even showing hidden folders and files, so at the moment I’m running blind in both senses!!

Dave

This is the machine with IP Address 192.168.0.19 dave-HP-EliteBook-8440
Do you have this directory
%LocalAppData%\PlexMediaPlayer

@sa2000 Sorry for the delay, with my girlfriend heavily pregnant (about to give birth in around 7-10 days) and sorting other things out. Anyway, here are the logs for my HP Elitebook, and my ex-wife and her partner have the same issue on their Ubuntu based PC with PMP also when connected to the server remotely…

{Additional info @ 1844GMT}
I thought I’d add that the issue only affects PMP & Web Browser access to the Live TV, Android & Roku remote devices stream TV without issues, which is very strange!! I’ve streamed Gigabytes of TV via WiFi on my Cubot Max Smartphone and both my sons Apple iPad and Android TV box, plus both my Xbox One S and my Girlfriends Xbox One has no issues streaming live TV, but the TV Grid on the Xbox is totally rubbish, so we tend not to use these devices, only use them for streaming movies and TV Shows stored on the HDD’s because of the TV Guide on the Xbox is terrible and also on the Roku!!
