DVR/Live TV issues - Choppy/frozen picture

Hi plex team,

I am having some issues and wanted to see if someone could look at my logs to help me figure out what might be going on.

Equipment im using:

Plex 1.11.0.4666
Synology DS 416Play
HDHomeRun CONNECT Duo - DVR/Live TV
Apple TV 4K - Plex app
OSX Web UI
iOS - Plex app
Android TV box w/Plex app (Specs)
(Newest versions of client apps)

  • Choppy live TV playback
  • Server disconnects when playing back recorded files
  • Files not transcoding/files stuck in the “tmp_transcoding” folder
  • Plex hangs and server needs restarting
  • Shows “selected” to record do not record
  • Plex seems to be hanging on to the HDHR even after recording has finished

I am having no issues with the movie/music side of the server. My issues relate to the Live TV/DVR side of things. Video will play back fine using the HDHomeRun app - so it doesn’t seem to be an issue wth the tuner or the channel signal strength. Am I asking far to much from this Synology DS416Play, or should I just subscribe to the HDHomeRun DVR service and have the recording stored on the DS416?

Now that I have discovered Plex after being an apple user for years, I love plex and would like to have everything on the DS.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

  • Also if note, the HDHR seems to play well when using the HDHR app and HDHR DVR setup. I am wondering if I am putting to much stress on my network trying to use plex to watch live tv.

Network setup:
150mb U/D internet service -> Fiber modem -> Telus modem/router in bridge mode -> Asus RT-AC87U Wireless router (Wifi devices have access here)-> TrendNet TEG-S24Dg gigabit switch (All wired devices are plugged in here)

Do i need to run a smart managed switch or a fully managed switch? Im at a loss here and am ready to pull out my hair.

Thanks guys,
Landon

The difference between the server and just using the HDHR app is the HDHR app gets a raw stream from the device. if it has hiccups they are generally not noticeable and go way on their own as it just keeps reading the stream.

PMS needs to analyze the input stream then send that info along with stream to players and transcode it for the devices that need it. ( only the Nvidia Shield can really direct play anything for live TV)

Though your HDHR app may be fine I would try repositioning your antenna if possible to get the best signal possible. Since you have iOS you can try this app http://genhelp.com/apps/signalgh.html You want good signal quality more than strength. ( there may be free apps too I just haven’t tried any)

I don’t know that particular NAS. Does it have any issues transcoding 1080p or 720p high bitrate content from your library
