Heya, Hoping for a bit of help setting up the TV/DVR. I’ve made progress by crawling the forums but I’m stuck atm.
HDHomerun connect works fine with win10 app, VLC & the HDHR viewer plugin. I cannot watch any channel live.running current version 3.52.2 on a Synology 415+. (I get the same error when I ran a separate server on an old PC for stuff & giggles.)
You didn’t provide much information with your original post.
What windows 10 app? The HDHR app? If so, SiliconDust has written their own player for their app. Plex uses the builtin player for the Client device.
VLC will work with just about anything you throw at it.
You also did not specify what you are trying to watch? HD content, SD content, is the content 1080i, 1080p, 720p?
What client device are you attempting to view Live TV using? Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, Shield TV, XBox One, or using the web interface? Some client devices can not handle interlaced content so any 1080i content will force a transcode on the server.
If your Plex Media Server is running on the Synology 415+ you mentioned did you refer to the Plex NAS Compatibility List to see if there were any restrictions on the NAS listed? According to the list the HD content might be supported for some content but higher bit rates could cause buffering.
I am running Plex on an 3rd gen i5 and can use my Connects to view Live TV on my Shield TV, Amazon Fire TV Stick, Amazon Fire TV 4K with no buffering. Each of those devices Direct Play Live TV Sessions.
If I try to watch Live TV using the web interface or my Roku Stick I do see transcoding of the mpeg2 video to h264 and the AC3 audio to AAC. But still only occasional buffering in the web interface, the Roku sees more buffering.
If you are watching Live TV on your computer I would suggest downloading the Plex Media Player app from the plex.tv/downloads page instead of using the web interface.
I was very specific intentionally since although I have various (minor) problems with plex, I am currently only trying to get the DVR running. Plex cannot tune a channel from the guide and cannot record any show.
I mentioned the other applications having no problems because I think I can rule out network issues, permissions etc. I also have my original plex server running on a MSI/Phenom II PC but moved to the synology 415+ because the PC moved the electric bill by a noticeable amount. The PC-based server has the identical problem. Neither can tune from the program guide but has no problem running from the plugin. I have been streaming to my PC at work just to see if it can run smoothly for hours. It can. I know plex can work with the hdhomerun Connect since the hdhr viewer 2 plugin works fine.
The plugin won’t run in firefox, but Chrome is fine. Watching OTA TV from the road is neat but not today’s problem.
I also have an hdhomerun extend, but that is unplugged atm to keep the setup simple until I can resolve the DVR/tuner issue.
If that silicon dust dvr solution had a free trial I’d try it immediately and if it worked out of the box I might not look back. I figured since I blew some cash on a lifetime plex pass specifically for the dvr solution, I’d give fixing the DVR a shot first.
