DVR not functioning

Hi all,

I’m fairly new to plex (8 months now) and my first post on the forum. After all of these months I’ve finally reached the point of complete frustration with the plex and the dvr function. It seemed hopeful that the new plex epg may have solved some of my issues but from what I can tell things have been the same for me.

  1. Can’t get the dvr to actually record scheduled tv shows. The shows appear on my recording schedule/calendar list but then they either record a partial show (10 mins) or don’t record at all.

  2. Scheduled recording prioroty list:
    Scheduled recordings show “no upcoming airings” though they are listed on the epg as airing on scheduled dates. Something isn’t connecting for sure.

  3. I’ve tried randomly recording shows but these fail as well.

  4. I’ve tried refreshing the epg numerous times to no avail. I’ve cancelled scheduled recordings and then rescheduled hoping things would change, again to no avail.

Am I doing something wrong? Please help me out as I’m completely frustrated with this system.

I’m currently on the most recent update. Using hdhomerun duo. Windows 10 OS.

The answers to all of your questions should be in your Plex Media Server logs. The logs will show reasons for an episode not being scheduled for recording. You might see something along the lines of the below messages:"

HD Only is selected for recording might show - Airing is not high enough quality

New Airings only selected might show - We are wanting a premiere and xxxxxxx is an old airing

Episode already exists in library might show - we found an existing item for xxxxxxxx.

Johnm_ColaSC, thanks for the response. Perhaps part of the problem for me as well is that with regards to the server logs - i feel like i just entered into deep space. I have no clue as to where exactly where to find the suggested messages. I did take look and didn’t see anything immediately that would make sense to me. What is your suggestion for me?

Look in the Plex Media Server.log, Plex Media Server.1.log, Plex Media Server.2.log, etc. Hoping you also have Debug logging enabled. In the short segment you posted above only seeing INFO, no DEBUG messages.

Should see lines like:

thanks for the guidance. Here’s what i found - still not understanding why this is.
It lists 3 of the primary shows that I have had set up on schedule to be recorded - Ellen’s Game of Games, American Ninja Warrior, and AFV (america’s funniest home videos). Here’s a brief copy of what i saw that might be of help -

I would suggest turning off Verbose logging. Typically you should only enable Verbose if a Plex Employee asks you to when working with them on diagnosing an issue. Verbose adds too much extra logging which causes your logs to fill up quickly and roll over more frequently. Typically Debug logging is only required.

I see the following in your logs for those shows. Not sure if this is a complete copy/paste of the entries because I did not notice for all the shows the channels/times showing for the episodes processed.

Guessing you might have either a specific channel or time setup in the Advanced recording settings for American Ninja Warrior:

thank you again for responding. Yes i did previously see that verbose logging was enable - have no idea how or when that happened as i’ve never messed around in this area. But i did shut it off. I didn’t post the entire log as i thought it would just be too much (perhaps i’m wrong) but I posted the section that seemed to be the most relevant to your suggestion of “Debug - DVR: Subscription”

THe issue of syncing channels/times for the episodes of the shows has been my problem. So, for example, in the chicagoland area these shows are on channels 5 NBC (5.1) and 7 ABC (7.1). Under the advanced tab for the dvr function i set it to record at the exact time and channel when possible. However, i’ve noticed quite a few times that the advance tab will not provide the correct channel to record or time. It will show either “any” or some odd channel that the show doesn’t play (at least in my region). By the way, i’ve already check to make sure my region was correct. Perhaps i’m missing something additional regarding my state/city settings (if there are)?
