DVR recordings are starting to stutter after pause on CCwGTV

Server Version#: Linux 1.41.0.8992

Recently I noticed that after I pause an episode on my Chromecast, when I resume it’s stuttering or dropping frames. If I exit and then play it again it plays fine.

Still slight stutters after pause for me. Anyone else notice this?

I’ve noticed that when watching something for a long period on CCwGTV, like a Football game at some point playback will freeze all together. dropping back to the guide will get the program to resume, but it will be stutterey when I go full screen and eventually freeze all together again. I often find I need to go back to the menu, choose a deferent section of the plex app then go back to the game I’m watching.

one thing to note, I usually only see this happen on programs I am also recording and watching live at the same time. Don’t usually have an issue when watching something that is not recording.

Also, half the time the app will crash out and I have to restart it when I try to fix the stutter.

I’m getting stuttering, buffering, and crashes when watching my local news recordings. One station sends 1080i, the other sends 720p. I even get the “This server’s connection is not fast enough…” message, which is odd. I get identical behavior on my local network, as well as remotely.

My plex server is pretty beefy with a 5700G, 48GB ram with 8GB dedicated to being the scratch disk for transcoding. All of that is running over 10Gb wired networking to my router, which goes out via my 1.2Gb symmetric connection for when I’m watching stuff while I travel. My CCWGTV connected via 5G WiFi which provides about 6Gb/s bandwidth to my local network.

I can easily stream multiple 4K HDR movies at the same time and the Chromecast plays the 4K content without a single fuss, but as soon as I play something on the DVR it chokes hard. Here’s the symptoms I’ve noticed:

  • Buffering for no reason when playing over my local network
  • Fast forward or rewinding will cause the playback to jump to a specific time in the program that’s usually 2/3 of the way through the recording, and it will not rewind past that unless you stop and restart playback
  • Skipping commercials or fast forwarding sometimes results in a buffering loop, restarting playback triggers a crash to the home screen
  • Switching the playback speed to 2X will result in a black screen with audio playing at normal speed, playback controls are unresponsive, audio will continue to play regardless of what app is open unless you force stop Plex in app settings
  • (Edit) Often after skipping commercials or fast forwarding, pressing left or right on the D-pad will no longer fast forward or rewind without first bringing up the UI by pressing down and then going up to the progress bar. Same thing happens with pausing. Restarting playback fixes it until you fast forward or commercial skip, force stop seems to last longer.

All of these issues occur intermittently and at random. They tend to occur more often if I watch one recorded news program, then switch to the next, but which issue replicates varies from day to day. Suffice it to say, this isn’t a bandwidth or performance issue, I’m confident it’s a stability issue with the PLEX app, because if I watch from my Pixel 6 Pro, or the Windows app on my desktop or laptop, none of this happens. Also it never happened on my Roku via wired or WiFi either, but I’ve since chucked that in the bin after they changed the terms of the contract after the sale.

I could see this being a setup issue on my end, but so far I haven’t found the magic setting. I’m considering picking up a Raspberry Pi 5 to see if I can get a better experience, but I haven’t been able to confirm if I can get Dolby Vision or Atmos support with Plex on the Pi either through Kodi or just by running Plex in Ubuntu.
