DVR Recordings Not Finishing

@DaveBinM @BRBMan nvm it just crapped out again

Hmmm. I’m still digging into this one. It’s proving tricky to track down, but I’m still working through it.

@DaveBinM update, I turned remote access off and touch wood I have not had an issue for 50+ hours now this is the longest I have gone without an issue and apparently I’m stuck with this version till its fixed as 1.6.1 is not compatible with the WinTV card I have and don’t feel like going from 6 at once to 2 with my hdhomerun.

@BRBMan try turning remote off see if it helps you as well

I think you are on to something with the remote access. I am seeing similar behavior. With remote access not working I seem to have better luck with the DVR actually recording a complete show.

I’d say that’s quite unlikely, as they’re not really related.

im not a coder by any means but it could have something to do will the calling home part of remote access superseding some other networking command in the dvr module and it hanging from there and not resuming, this program checks for internet connection a lot and cries when it is not there. is there a way to make the program just check on load if its an Ethernet connection to only check once if on wireless check always? then if there is a brief internet issue but the network is still up recording will not fail?

Hi!

This is based purely on observation, so take this with a grain of salt, but maybe it at least could point in some direction.

I’ve been struggling with ths issue the last couple of days, and in the process I’ve discovered a couple of things.
After looking into the .grab-folder (where the DVR stores in-process recordings) as a recording failed, I realized that it had only managed to record a couple of seconds before giving up.
This has led me to believe that there’s something going on during the initial muxing of the .ts-file that Plex cannot handle, which correlates with some of the reports in this thread about the transcoder locking up.

By simultaneously recording the same show in Plex (where it fails) and TVHeadend, I have been able to identify one such condition which makes the transcoder fail every single time, leading to an aborted recording:

In cases where there’s more than one audio stream, like kid’s shows with more than one language, Plex will almost instantly fail if one or more of the audio streans are empty.
Here’s the ffmpeg output from one such file which was recorded successfully by TVHeadend but aborted in Plex:

Stream #0:0[0x46b]: Video: mpeg2video (Main) ([2][0][0][0] / 0x0002), yuv420p(tv, top first), 720x576 [SAR 64:45 DAR 16:9], 25 fps, 25 tbr, 90k tbn, 50 tbc
Stream #0:10x46c: Audio: mp3 ([3][0][0][0] / 0x0003), 0 channels, s16p
Stream #0:20x46d: Audio: mp2 ([3][0][0][0] / 0x0003), 48000 Hz, stereo, s16p, 192 kb/s
Stream #0:30x46e: Audio: mp3 ([3][0][0][0] / 0x0003), 0 channels, s16p
Stream #0:40x46f: Audio: mp3 ([3][0][0][0] / 0x0003), 0 channels, s16p
Stream #0:50x470: Audio: mp3 ([3][0][0][0] / 0x0003), 0 channels, s16p
Stream #0:60x471: Subtitle: dvb_teletext ([6][0][0][0] / 0x0006)
Stream #0:70x472: Audio: mp3 ([3][0][0][0] / 0x0003), 0 channels, s16p

I can supply the .ts if needed.

It wouldn’t surprise me if there’s more conditions that trips the transcoder.

Again, this is based on my observations, and could very well be unrelated, a whole other issue, or both. Just wanted to get it out there. Thanks for reading.

@skeletorjus Ooh! That’s an interesting scenario. If you could drop over a 30-60 second raw .ts capture from the tuner, that would be great.

Thanks for your continued effort @DaveBinM.

Anyone installed 1.8.2 released today? I’m assuming it doesn’t magically fix the problems?

I did. The update doesn’t address this issue.

@DaveBinM. I think I caught it right before its going to crap out 5 tuners active and only 4 recording also upgraded to Version 1.8.2.4209

Im on 8.2.4209 have this too… hdhome run prime windows 8.1

Turning off transcoding didn’t made a difference, still stalls at then end of recording.

I believe I fixed this

The Dvr was overloading my operating system hard drive. By moving DVR recordings off to a second harddrive, I got rid of all the problems like dropped recordings, stuttering, and hangs

Try moving your plex localdata storage to a second hard drive

I’m running 3hd an ssd and 2 mec drives TV to 1 mec Movies to the other with the ssd it has the plex folders on it so It may prolong your errors but I still get them with this setup. when I was running WMC it handled 4 hd recording to a single mec drive without issues.

So I have a problem not quite like this (although I have seen the failed to complete recording once) but it is Live TV and scheduled recordings. I have a QNAP 251+ and it works awesome for Plex and added a HomerunConnect HD recently and when it records it start like 5-10 minutes late but it still ends the recording on time. I have checked the NAS time and it is in perfect sync and it doesnt make sense that the time is off and starting “late” because it would continue recording on past the end time. Any idea’s?? I have looked around the forum for ideas and founf nothing on this and didnt want to start a whole new thread on it since it is kind of this same scheduled recording live tv issue. Any help is greatly appreciated as I am trying to get this working before fall shows as the DVR so that I am not having to get my shows in “other” methods.

is it a random cutoff at the start or is it standardish time? are you recording something else on the same tuner before that show? do you have allow partial recording check? do you have encode recording checked?

Seems to only happen at start time… like it is just starting late. Nothing else was even programmed that day. I do have Allow partial checked so I guess if it locked up st start time then recovered 5 minutes later it would have started. I see that option in the homerun device settings and it is set to OFF if that has the one you are referring to…

chose something that’s about to start and uncheck partial see if it still cuts off ill check back in an hour or so

what drive has your plex local data?

It doesnt matter if youre saving to a second hard drive afterwards, if your plex localdata is on your main operating system drive its going to buffer to that drive before transferring over. Maybe wmc doesnt buffer to the primary hard drive like plex does, who knows

I installed hdhomerun software and plex to a separate hard drive along with pointing the localdata there too, just to be sure

Going on another full day of recordings with no issue on 1.8.2.4209

@osalcido its installed on my ssd the mec drives are the recording locations I get 1 to 2 days before I get an issue longest being 53 hours. not had it lockup since the update but not been 2 full days yet.
