DVR records for a few seconds then stops

Using a WinTV-quadHD tuner which has worked well for years. Recently, DVR only records a few seconds the stops. Noticed live TV also plays for a few seconds, then buffers for several seconds, but then continues just fine. Any help would be appreciated. I am such a fan of Plex and sing its praises every chance I get.

Without additional information I would suggest you check the signal strength at your tuner. Debug level server logs that cover the period of failed tune attempts would be very helpful in identifying the cause.

where do I find the logs in my file system (using ubuntu)? or are they only available within the app? there I seem to see nothingā€¦

however, meanwhile I can report that I can see all kinds of broken recordings:

  • stop after a few seconds to stop after more than one hour but before end of the movie
  • size zero for recorded files (so somehow it started but did not record anything
  • recording starts only in the middle of the movieā€¦

No glaring errors in those excerpts and most can be ignored as diagnostic messages. Without the full set of logs it is tough to form context of what is happening from so little.

USB tuners tend to be problematic since they can change location after a reboot or dropping offline (powersave).

In the ā€˜Plex Media Server.logā€™ file, the better words to look for would be corrupt, failed, access denied and http 400/500 errors. You can try to start a live stream and watch for Signal messages to find out how good the signal is.

regarding the USB devices: Iā€™m aware of these issues, but Apps like Kaffeine do not show recording issues on my Ubuntu system
BTW: I also tried to go through TVHeadend with Antennas Proxy, but the results were worse than direct access to the USB Devices by DVB-API of Linuxā€¦

Complete logs means attaching the full zip file that was downloaded into a reply, otherwise I have to ask several questions and then may still need to see the full zip to understand what is happening. (Plex Employees usually wonā€™t help or reply if not present)

  1. Server Version
  2. OS Version, Server or Workstation. Did you load a GUI.
  3. Client being used for testing and version
  4. CPU
  5. Location of transcoder folder
  6. Are you running Plex native, docker, snap, VM.
  7. Storage, internal, external, NAS
    8 Country (Different broadcast standards)

Your choice of using /media can create permission problems.

Find the Codecs directory, default path is: /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Codecs

Stop Plex, donā€™t remove the .device.id file but delete the contents of the subdirectory, then restart Plex and try again.

One additional request: It appears that your logs may be ā€œinfoā€ level. Would you please switch to debug level so that they produce more information for troubleshooting? Donā€™t check ā€œverboseā€ - it is too much info and causes the logs to roll off to quickly. Note that at debug level your logs may only go back a day or so, therefore it is important to capture logs fairly soon after the issue happens.

  1. Log in to Plex Web
  2. Go to Settings ā†’ (Your server name) ā†’ General
  3. Make sure the ā€œShow Advancedā€ button (image) has been clicked.
  4. Make sure that the ā€œEnable Plex Media Server debug loggingā€ is checked and that ā€œEnable Plex Media Server vebose loggingā€ is UNchecked.
  5. Click ā€œSave Changesā€
  6. Restart your Plex Media Server

I tried again and I can reproduce my issue for live TV (which I think is related to recordings with 0 Bytes)

storage is on an internal NVME drive with 2 TB, and a lot of free spaceā€¦

I see your transcoder failing during that time period with a codec error. Have you tried the recommendation above by @pl_5309 to stop your plex server, delete the codecs, and start plex server? That is my first go-to when Iā€™m having recording problems.

I donā€™t have your tuner and Iā€™m not sure that I found the tech specs for the correct device. Does it connect to your Plex server hardware via USB? Some of the information in the Plex Tuner Service log for your tuner is different than my HDHR tuner, and I donā€™t know if Iā€™m interpreting it correctly. I do see some messages that look odd to me, but I donā€™t know if these are the cause of the issue, or the result of the issue:

thanks for the tipp to delete / reinstall the codecs.
after that it looks like I donā€™t get the failure at starting live tv viewing any more.
regarding recording Iā€™ll watch if it is also fixedā€¦

yes, my DVB-C devices are connected by USB to the machine running PLEX.
Outside of PLEX all works fine (tested with Kaffeine)

However, after deleting the codecs it seems to be better. Ietā€™s see if the recording issues are also gone (as the live-tv issue)ā€¦

I have to add an interesting note: the 264 encoder I deleted was not restored in the directory, and the quality of transcoding went really bad. After I restored the old file liblibx264_encoder.so the quality was fine again but also the problem of failure at starting live TV watching was backā€¦
unfortunately I donā€™t really know what happens there, or where these files come from and whyā€¦

You are experiencing a DNS and DNS Rebinding issue that is probably interfering with the download of the codecs.

You have HW transcoding turned on but it doesnā€™t seem to be activating properly. Just a general observation is that the server appears busy and Plex is struggling with the database access. I would run a manual optimize and if is large or very old consider doing a dump and load to reorg the data.

Final concern was the boost messages with regard to /media, is this local or network storage?

I use /media as local storage on an NVME disk. that came from a misunderstanding :wink: and Iā€™m aware of the file permission issues. As it works at least sometimes, I would assume, that this can not be a problem.

DNS or you are inadvertently blocking the Plex pubsub servers - could be a cert issue if using custom cert and needs updating for SSL3.

Video Driver - Plex has decided to package the driver and not depend on the OS installed ones. Solves some problems but creates others. It sees your GPU, just doesnā€™t engage it. Not a long term solution but you could drop this into your Preferences.xml to see if the behavior changes.

You will want to check the dashboard while something is playing to see if (HW) is next to any transcode. Also puzzled why the Desktop client would be asking for a transcode in the first place.

I do see ā€œhwā€ next to the transcoding information in the dashboard.
And I was also wondering, why the windows desktop app sometimes goes for transcoding instead of direct playā€¦

Unfortunately, I have no idea how to act on the DNS issue. Also in my browser this address does not connect to anywhere, but I donā€™t block anything in my firewall. Where should it connect to ? Do you have any tips on how to proceed here?
However, I can connect from anywhere to my server through https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settingsā€¦ so NAT and Port-forward do work correctly.
Could it be an issue, that I used a different port than 32400 for forwarding?

I also installed the new version from yesterday and Iā€™ll report if things change.

today in the morning 4:32 it happened again: only a few seconds recorded, then recording stopped. it shows 9 seconds, but it does not start playing. the file on disk shows 946580 Bytes only.

maybe the recording interfered with the maintenance window (from 4-5)? but the other occasions where not at that time-periodā€¦
