Edimax EW-7811Un and RasPlex 0.4.1 wifi connection issue

Hello fellow RasPlexers!

Been using Plex for a long time now on MacMini. Love it!

I'm trying to setup RasPlex 0.4.1 with an Edimax EW-7811Un but it keeps failling when I try to configure it through RasPlex GUI.

In "System Settings -> Networks" RasPlex can see my SSID and it shows 100% signal strength, so i don't think it's a signal issue. When I try to connect, it prompts me for the password, which I type in, and then I get "Network Error, input/output" or something very similar.

I have both the Edimax dongle and FLIRC dongles plugged into the Raspberri, and I was able to connect to wifi a couple of times by interchanging the Edimax and FLIRC dongles.

My router is setup with WPA and WPA2, both EAS and TKIP, and as I mentioned I was able to connect a couple of times and speeds were good, so I don't think it's a router config issue.

I know I can't make any config changes to /etc/network/interfaces since it is read only and cannot be made read/write.

Anyone have any suggestions or experiencing similar issue with RasPlex 0.4.1 and Edimax 7811?

Thanks for any help! :)

Sounds like a power supply issue, running these two USB dongles you'll require at least a 1.5A, recommended 2A, power supply.

Incidentally, you may get buffering/stuttering issues using wifi unless your media are SD, low bitrate files. Ethernet connection is the recommended route for Rasplex.

Regards

Thanks for the quick reply Ned. The thought had occured to me as I was typing this forum thread.

I will check my power supply this evening to make sure. I believe it is a 1.5A, but you recommend a 2A to be safe.

I also prefer Ethernet but it's a pain. I suppose i'll get that Ethernet ran regardless one of these weekends because I like to run my media at full bitrates and res.

Thanks again buddy!

Instead of cabling back to your router use one of the many Powerline adapters, I use some of these on my Rasplex clients, works better than WiFi.

Regards.

Thanks for the great suggestion. I'll get a kit and see how it goes.

BTW, if I do use the Edimax dongle, it looks like I would need to use a powered USB HUB. Did some reading and it seems that the Pi cannot deliver more than 1A even if you feed it more.
