Wifi always failing

Hi guys,

I have a raspberry pi 2 with Rasplex 1.0.1 installed.
I’m using a Wifi adaptor from TP-Link ( http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/cat-11_TL-WDN4200.html ) but I’m having lot of issues with it.
Sometimes I managed to connect but it disconnects randomly. I am close to the router so it’s not an issue with signal strength.

Is this a Rasplex known issue? Is there anything that I can do to fix it?
Do you recommend any other Wifi usb adaptor that works better with raspberry and rasplex?

Thanks in advance.

I’ve got no experience of that adapter I’m afraid, but I do have a TP Link TD W9980 router and have no problems with that, I’m using an Edimax EW-7811UN 150Mbps Wireless Nano USB Adapter which I bought from Amazon for £9.99, excellent and rock solid connection through a brick wall and about 20ft distance.

This is the best WiFi adapter for RPi I have found:

WiFi adapter - £4.95 - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WIFI-300Mbps-WIRELESS-ADAPTOR-802-11-B-G-N-LAN-NETWORK-USB-DONGLE-ADAPTER-WPS-/330836774580?hash=item4d07688eb4:g:JaEAAOSwu4BVxJBK

Operates at 300Mbps rather than 150Mbps that the Edimax ones use, I had some issues with the Edimax ones and replaced all of my RPi WiFi adapters with these, no problems.

@NedtheNerd and @edjonesy thanks for your suggestions, really helpful!
Do you guys do any configuration, like setting a static ip?
Or you just plug in the adapter configure the network in the GUI of Rasplex and that’s it?

Thanks.

No real need for a static IP address, but set one if you want.

Plug in the adapter, boot the RPi, skip First Rin Wizard, go to System Settings from Home screen, enable WiFi, and connect to your router.

Regards

All items belonging to me/family are on static IP addresses, I have them grouped into categories, bit OCD about stuff like that, shouldn’t make a difference though. I’ll have a look at the 300Mbps adapter, a bit of extra speed is always good, although, my set up is streaming 1080p mp4 files with no problem, my server is wired, the pi is wireless.

Hi guys,

I bought the Edimax EW-7811UN 150Mbps Wireless Nano USB Adapter that seems to be a widely used device.
I get better results but I’m still struggling with my connection.
So basically sometimes the connection just fails. And when I’m watching a movie I get this error “Get Directory Failed”. Seems this issue that was reported awhile ago https://github.com/RasPlex/RasPlex/issues/429

Do you have any suggestions to fix this?

I tested with an Ethernet connection I can watch videos smoothly!

Thanks.

I experienced a lot of speed issues and random disconnects with both my edimax and tp-link wifi dongles on the pi --after flawless operation for many months… Couldn’t really track it down, so I pulled an ethernet cable to the location…

I tried multiple adapters, brands, power supplies, etc.,

I really don’t know, sorry. The Edimax adapter on my Pi 2 works great, perhaps it might be something at the other end, on your server perhaps, or like @tiny-e suggests, try and run some ethernet from your router to the pi, even if it is just a really long ethernet cable across the floor to try and see if ethernet fixes the issue.

I’m having the same issue,

  • Raspberry pi B+
  • Rasplex 1.01
  • Edimax EW-7811un
rpi around 5m from the access point

But the connection is too slow to do anything, can’t even sign in to plex.
There is a network connection, as I can ssh to the pi. But this is also very sluggish.

When I use a wired connection everything works perfectly.
I’ve allready tried different power supplies (up to 3A) but no noticable change.

Suggest changing the WiFi adapter, see my post above regarding the best one around at the moment, Edimax operates at a rated speed of 150Mbps but you get nothing near it in reality,
