Editing metadata and the padlock symbol

When I open the edit window for example on a movie by clicking the small icon that looks like a pencil/pen in the lower left of the movie poster this then gives me the edit window for the metadata etc. I notice there is a padlock symbol to the left of each field, sometimes it is clouded orange other times it is just same colour as the window background.

Can someone explain what this padlock symbol is for and how it is used (I am assuming it can be used to lock the metadata in the field to stop any changes being made but no sure)

That’s exactly right, in theory. When the lock is orange, Plex should not overwrite the information in that field when it refreshes metadata from the net. You can still edit it manually. When you manually edit, the lock automatically turns orange.

@beckfield
Thanks, I thought as much however one thing I do notice is that quite often after I have edited the metadata and then selected the padlock to lock the changes (icon goes orange) click save and that should now prevent any further changes right? sometimes if I then go back to the same movie and select the edit option the padlock is now grey which to me says it is unlocked again.

What I would like to do is perform my edit and then prevent any further changes to that particular metadata field so can’t understand why it would appear to be unlocked again?

I’ve seen some other reports in the last couple weeks of others experiencing similar problems. There may be a bug in recent builds. You might want to look for some of those threads and follow along to keep up with progress.
