Let Plex write the metadata to the file

Do you konw if it is possible to let Plex write the metadata to the file it self?

If would be cool, then it is reddy for your iPod, iPad or iPhone.

Welcome to the forums!

It’s a good idea, and I believe ccjensen (of ATV2 fame) is working on an external utility to accomplish just that.

yup, made a thread for it in the dev forum:

http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/27944-tool-to-embed-pms-held-metadata-in-to-mp4-file/

Would be nice if it wrote on all files. Not only MP4.

Stefan

Unfortunately, John, only certain file types support embedding of metadata. As far as I know, mp4/m4v and mkv are the only two…

I assume (always dangerous) that this still is just a script for Mac only, based on following the thread on the developer side.

Hoping my assumption is wrong.

Still Mac only, but I still think it would be quite easy to get it working. I would need someone to find a command line tool that works on windows, and someone willing to work with me to do testing (I don’t own any windows systems).

I realize this is an old topic, but I'd love to see this baked into the Plex Media Server. Something like a check box in the library settings to overwrite tag information with stored metadata when possible would be great. I ripped and encoded a few hundred DVD's/Bluerays and none of them have any tags, but I have painstakingly verified the matching and poster art etc in Plex. I'd really like that data to be available to other apps, such as iTunes etc... I am running Windows, so the existing external solution doesn't appear to be an option for me. :-(

I third this. wont be a fantastic feature- even sharing files with ppl, having the metadata already there would rock

I am looking to write metadata to a file and tried to follow the link referenced in this post, but the link is no longer active. Can anyone provide guidance on how to do this? I am running Plex in FreeNas v9.3 STABLE.

Thanks,

I’m supportive of this feature, but I like having my metadata isolated to some extent. If this were to happen as an “optional” feature that would be superb.

A checkbox for “Allow Plex to manage my media’s file names and metadata” as a per library setting would be awesome, and similar to what iTunes does, if I understand it properly. You can choose to have iTunes manage the files and metadata for you or leave the files themselves alone.

Yes that’s basically it. You can let iTunes keep the file’s names and location organised, or not touch them. Up to the user.
