Enabling hardware transcoding with Synology 916+ as my PMS

I have the 64-bit version. What I found strange is that:

  1. Hardware accelerated transcoding is a Plex Pass feature.
  2. Hardware accelerated transcoding is not mentioned as a Plex Pass feature.

Hardware accelerated transcoding is pretty much a must when using Plex with a NAS.
The Plex client is not very flexible when it comes to video formats so a lot of material needs to be transcoded, especially if you use Plex on Apple devices, or on LG TVs.

I am now a Plex Pass subscriber and hardware accelerated transcoding works like a charm. If I knew that from the start I would have become a Plex Pass user years ago …

me too… I tried really hard to stay out-of-box synology but the capability is just so much better with plex. I finally gave up on synology media server and found that PMS will happily (on the 918+) transcode mpeg2 dvd tips to H264 on the fly without plex pass hardware transcoding. I followed the advice here and thankfully the 64 bit download and install process was smooth and error free. I only had to grant plex read perm on the content folder

the solution is so much better than synology video station which is nice in its own right but just not as good as plex

Just to chip in - I’ve got plex pass, bought a Synology as it supported HW acceleration - and completely missed the fact I had to manually get and install the 64-bit version (and then turn it on under advanced) to actually get the feature.
