My 916 is on DSM 6.1.4-15217 Update 5
My plex is on Version 1.10.1.4602
I was sure that the Synology supported Hardware Transcoding, my shield does but I am having issues with that so swapped over to the synology as my PMS but where there should be a tick box option (where there is one on the shield) there is just no option on the Synology.

Your DS916+ does indeed support hardware transcoding:

The reason you do not see the option is because you are not a PlexPass holder. HW transcoding is PlexPass feature.
To enable HW transcoding, you would need the following sequence:

Ok well I have signed out and back and it’s definitely seeing my plexpass because it’s showing hardware transcoding as a option for my shield so I know I am looking in the right place, but for the synology pms its just not there.

That looks good. Now you can either sign your server out and back in or just restart it. Either way, the option will show in the Settings.
I am really sorry I keep feeling like I am doing something wrong these past few days…
I signed out of the synology and no luck so rebooted the synology as well, I have even logged out and in of the plex web interface and its still not showing the hardware transcoder.
Below is a screenshot of what you should be seeing now that you have an active Plex Pass.
To see it, you must have also installed the 64 bit version of PMS from Plex.tv (The Synology Package Center version is 32 bits and does not support HW transcoding).
That’s pretty much what I see under my shield PMS but under my synology PMS which is what I want to use this is what I see,
I left in the time stamp so you can see its a new photo.
There you can see it’s enabled on my shield.
If the shield is seeing it, AND you’ve signed the server out/back in OR restarted it… but it’s still not showing:
Per the Synology web page, it’s a Braswell CPU which does support hardware transcoding.

Please confirm for me which version of PMS you installed? Where you downloaded it from?
I downloaded it from the actual PMS page you get when you click the plex link from the Synology app, it said there is a new version please download I clicked it and a file popped up. I had assumed it would know which version it was currently running and give me the correct one to download. I don’t recall it taking me to another page, although of course I could be a idiot and wrong I thought the file just popped up and I clicked save.
PlexMediaServer-1.10.1.4602-f54242b6b-x86 is the filename of the file it gave me to download.
There’s the problem. “X86” is 32-bits. HW transcoding must have 64 bit software (the chip requires it)

In Package Center, Perform a “Manual Install”, Browse to the location where the file is stored on you computer, OK that and let it upload then “Install”.
After it restarts, the option will be available

If you downloaded the server package from Synology, you got the 32 bit version (they don’t carry the 64 bit).
Download it from Plex.tv and you’ll have it
