So far, have a love-hate relationship with the new player. Better subtitle switching and video thumbnails are all awesome. There are just a few features that I’ve found myself missing:
Can’t switch audio source easily. When I want to stream the audio to airplay speakers, or play on my AirPods, that menu item in the video player is no longer there.
Siri playback control. I’m frequently using siri to “skip 5 minutes” or go “back 1:30” hoping this gets addressed through development, because right now it only skips 10 sec increments regardless of the duration requested.
The playhead gets lost in the progress bar. Ideally, the behavior of the playhead is the same as the old player…elapsed time moves across the screen with the progress bar, with time remaining at the far right.
Turning it on causes the player to buffer for several minutes. I check the upload speed from my Synology and it drops to a few KB/s. Turning it off fixes the issue.
I havent had any issues woth the bew player causing crashes, but i use the ten second skip forward or back quite a bit. I was trying to do that in Plex and was thinking something was wrong woth my remote. Took me a few minutes to remember the new video player was enabled. Switched back to standard player and the 10 second skip still works, so it apparently just isnt a feature in your new player. That is one that you should definitely bake in. Also, noticed today that click to play/pause is no longer available either. You have to use the play/pause button… another issue that needs to be fixed. I had to turn the standard plyer on because of these two issues. Once you get these few things resolved, I will gladly switch back to your player! Thanks!
After spending some more time with the new player, the BIGGEST issue I have with it was pointed out by the original poster:
This is a MAJOR ISSUE.
I leave my Apple TV set to play on my HomePods 100% of the time. Never had an issue with built-in player, but with new player it not only isnt’ an option in the top level menu within the player, but it’s like it changes the default to the HDMI output even though the Apple TV still has my stereo-pair HomePods selected as the output.
I’ll start a movie or show and it will be coming from the tv speakers. I then have to go to the Apple TV menu, de-select my HomePods, then re-select them, then go back to Plex app.
Please fix this audio routing/AirPlay 2 issue ASAP!!!
Same (frustrating) issue here with Airplay, the player is not defaulting the sound to the HomePod…thanks anyway for the solution of having to reselect the HomePod in the AppleTV menu.
This is really annoying - I also like to listen to my Apple TV using my AirPods at night, but with the enhanced video player the audio source option is not there and I can’t seem to find a way of getting around it!
Same here. So far it’s the only issue I’ve had with the enhanced player. It’s not a bitrate issue because I played 40+Mbps 1080 streams without issues. Yet, an 18 Mbps stream twitches. Forcing transcoding resolves the problem. But then it also transcodes the audio down to AAC.
I have the same issue with audio being out of sync with the picture. I try the enhanced player from time to time with various videos but I always end up turning it off within a minute or two because of this.
Updated to the latest Apple TV Plex player, (ver. 1.40.1 (11962)) and have had only one issue, (doesn’t matter if advance player is on or off) at random when playing back, I noticed that a TV show or Movie I’m watching will drop frames and studder on playback of HEVC, (H.265) encoded files. This doesn’t happen a lot, but it seems to happen between 2 to 3 times per hour. I also noticed that it seems to happen at the same point in a show or movie when I backup to the problem area and repeat playback.
I also checked the file on the server and it plays back in VLC just fine, with no frame lost.
Never had this problem before.
My server is a Mac Pro, (mid 2012) 12 core, 3.33 Ghz running Mac OS 10.12.6. I can run higher versions of Mac OS but for compatibility with software I use, I prefer this version of Mac OS.
