Episode numbers showing up for some episodes but not all in TV Shows Library

Do you happen to have the server logs for that?

I performed the Plex Dance, and the correct Episode names appeared after completing the operation.

I performed the operation on two files between 9:50 AM and 10:05 AM on 10/14/2022:

media@livingroom:~$ cd storage/dvr/Home\ Economics\ \(2021\)/Season\ 03/

media@livingroom:~/storage/dvr/Home Economics (2021)/Season 03$ mv Home\ Economics\ \(2021\)\ -\ S03E04\ -\ Wedding\ Bouquet\ \$125.ts ../../../

media@livingroom:~/storage/dvr/Home Economics (2021)/Season 03$ mv ../../../Home\ Economics\ \(2021\)\ -\ S03E04\ -\ Wedding\ Bouquet\ \$125.ts ./

media@livingroom:~/storage/dvr$ cd ../../The\ Simpsons\ \(1989\)/Season\ 34/

media@livingroom:~/storage/dvr/The Simpsons (1989)/Season 34$ mv The\ Simpsons\ \(1989\)\ -\ S34E03\ -\ Lisa\ the\ Boy\ Scout.ts ../../../

Logs (4.2 MB) attached.

@dbirch,

I don’t have the server logs for this specific title. I do have server logs for a different program and episode. Would it help to post the server logs and the file description here?

Thanks for all your efforts in looking into this issue. It was also good to see that another user @dugiehowsa was experiencing the same issue.

@dbirch, Clarification did you mean the server logs for when I was doing the plex dance? If that’s what’s needed yes I have those. When I initially read the post I thought you were asking for the server logs when the show was first recorded.

Let me know if the logs for the dance are what you were asking for.
Thanks,

Library → Manage Library → Edit → Advanced

Do you have “prefer local metadata” checked or unchecked for that library?

I don’t think that’s suppose to do anything to .mkv files and i don’t use .ts files…. BUT…

I had an odd issue with that. When I had that option checked, there was some kind of bug that was causing some of my shows to have an incorrect date (with no embedded metadata)

If I recall correctly, they were showing the date in some odd year way in the future, like 2037 or something like that

If it’s already unchecked, disregard, but if not I would uncheck “prefer local metadata” and refresh the metadata for the problemed show

It may do nothing but I’m curious if my bug may somehow be related to yours

@JaysPlex I will check on the setting you suggested. To clarify, hoping to find a solution to the issue from happening when Plex completes a recording of a TV show. Currently on a random basis the title is left blank but the correct date is shown in the recorded date field. The problem for an episode is ‘fixed’ when the title is manually populated.

I will check the setting you suggested and let you know what I find.

Thanks,

@JaysPlex Found the setting different menu navigation. “Prefer local metadata” was unchecked for the TV library - print screen below. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yes, for the Dance

Server log attached. Scan of the library started around 22:09. File name is:
Bull (2016) - S06E16 - The Diana Affair.ts
plexserverlog.zip (166.9 KB)

Let me know if I can provide any additional help.

Again thanks for taking the time to review.

Thats only 1 of the files in the plex server logs that I was looking for, but from what I can see DEBUG - -> We found a local media item with rooted metadata in Bull (2016)/Season 06 its almost treating it as if there was local metadata (which you said was disabled)

Can you try moving that show to somewhere not currently indexed by plex, plex dancing, but dont move the files back. Create a new library use the settings we recommended above.

@dbirch Sorry when I saw the request for server logs, I was thinking of the actual server log file. Attached are the complete logs from the plex dance on 10/14/22 at 22:09.
Plex Media Server Logs_2022-10-14_22-10-35.zip (3.8 MB)

Please clarify the troubleshooting step requested: The statement indicates moving the show (episode), then create a new library. The current library is TV Shows. Are you indicating to create a totally new library such as TV Shows-1 then move only that episode into that new library? This episode is currently in a folder ‘Bull (2016)’/‘Season 06’ with other episodes from that season.

Trying to make sure I understand the request so I complete it correctly.
Thanks,

“Prefer local metadata” was unchecked. I checked it, and performed a “Refresh all meta data” on the TV Shows library. No change.

@wgr Ideally you would movie Bull (2016) outside of your library, scan, clean bundles, and empty trash, then create a new TV - Testing library and then add the new location to that.

@dbirch Steps followed:
moved Bull (2016) to directory not scanned by Plex
Scanned, clean bundles and emptied trash
Created new TV Shows Test Library and pointed to newly created directory
Plex scanned that library and identified all episodes correctly

Not sure what that means at this time regarding the old location, but everything updated correctly in the new location.

I wasn’t sure if the server logs were of any value at this point, but included just in case. The move into the new location and scanning took place around 09:43.

Again appreciate you taking the time to review the issue.

When you previously did the plex dance, where you doing the entire show or just the affected episodes?

If it was just the episodes I think I know what is happening. Now that the we having a working test case, can we try removing the test library, clean bundles and empty trash, then move the show back to the original location and see if it works now.

@dbirch The previous attempt was moving only the episode not the entire show.

I did remove the test library and put the show back in the ‘normal’ library. When plex rescanned all episode titles were updated correctly. (The show had numerous episodes that had titles missing.)

I have several other shows with the same symptom that I was fixing manually. Plan is to try and move the entire show to different directory and follow the steps before moving back into the library.

Thanks,

Yep I suspect that parts of the broken naming persisted at the show level. By just dancing the episode we never actually fixed that issue. When you Danced the entire show it re-pulled correct info and which is why it is working.

@dbirch Any theory on what might be causing the issue? Guessing not, but thought I would ask.

I have shows that have episodes labeled correctly, but occasionally when a new episode is recorded the title is left blank. I noticed several episodes last week recorded with no title, but many recorded with the title populated correctly.

Gary

Did either of you ever upgrade to the Plex TV Series agent and then revert back to the TVDB?

I just encountered someone who’s having the exact same problem with the show titles only displaying “Episode 1” like yours is

@JaysPlex I don’t recall reverting back once Plex went to the new agent/scanner. Prior to the change I was importing the EPG because of issues previously with the agent plex was using. Once Plex went to the new agent, so far as I remember I did not try to go back to the old agent or continue manually importing the EPG.

If of any relevance, going back thru recorded shows the episode naming problem for me seems to have started fall of 2021.

Thanks,
