Episodes not scanning

This one’s got me stumped. I needed to replace some episodes from one episode of a TV series that weren’t showing up correctly, so I deleted the old ones, replaced with the new and rescanned.

Except the new episodes didn’t show up. The season had dropped from 10 episodes to 6.

I checked the names, editing them down to bare bones, and rescanned. No difference. Relocated the files from /showname/season 2/(files) to /showname/(files) and rescanned. No difference. Still six episodes of that season.

So I removed the entire season to a different directory and rescanned. The season disappeared from Plex entirely, as expected. Emptied trash and cleaned bundles. Put everything back to /showname/season 2/(files) and rescanned.

Now the entire season’s still not showing up.

Can anyone suggest something I might try?

Verify your files are actually valid and play in a desktop video player (e.g. VLC)

Go to

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

  1. Look up your show on TheTVDB
  2. Take the title as it is used on TheTVDB. If there is something in parentheses, take that too. If the title contains invalid characters (depends on your file system), like § : % *, simply leave them out.
  3. Check the naming and the folder structure of your show. Name the top folder of the show exactly after the title on TheTVDB. No abbreviations. No additional subfolders. No aliases. Add the (year) in parentheses when episode 1 of season 1 of this show was aired.
  4. Name the episode files according to the above linked naming guide. Use the same title as for the top folder. Show's Title - s01e01 - additional info.ext (’- additional info’ can be left out)
  5. After you corrected the naming and folder structure, perform the Plex Dance with all files for this show.

Dont forget step 5!

Firstly, thanks very much - it worked.

I have no idea how or why it worked, but it worked. Everything had already been done except that I’d done the Plex Dance with one season instead of the whole series (local media assets were already at the bottom, naming conventions were already right, had done the Plex Dance with the season that was being problematic), but dumping the entire series and reinstalling it seems to have done the trick.

Thanks again!
