Error when fast forwarding Live TV

When I am recording a show and then I start watching from the beginning while it is still recording, things work fairly well for me on my Nvidia Shield TV (Win7-based PMS). If I use the remote to fast forward (I click the right hand button three times successively) I immediately get “Playback has stopped because the connection to the PMS has been lost, CANCEL/RETRY”. If I hit Retry it puts me back to the beginning of the recording and if I hit Cancel it exits out of the playback session. One FF click or two seem to be just fine (three or more then see above). Nothing seems to really get affected (other than my patience). PMS still working, recording etc. Makes it very hard to move around the recording. Same thing happens if I am watching live TV without recording after pausing it long enough to give it time to record enough of the show so I have enough room to fast forward 3 times.

Anybody else seeing that?

I have the basically exact same experience with my Shields. It just can’t keep up and is not as robust as the CableCo DVRs or a TiVo I have used in the past. To a much lesser extent this can happen with a completed recording as well. Hopefully Plex will improve the stability over time, meanwhile I don’t do much skipping around with Live TV or just wait until the program has completed to watch. Still have to be careful shipping through commercials to fast.

I find it somewhat surprising that it is so difficult to get this working correctly given that other companies perfected the technology over 15 years ago. However TiVo and others were using hardware designed specifically for this purpose and patents are involved. It’s not like I could do any better so I keep my criticism muted.

Did my prayers get answered?
