A comment was made in the ProWeek Fireside Chat that chimed with my main Plex Issue. But first I want to say how delighted I am with the Plex product. Since I was able to move to Fibre to the Premises at both ends I have been marvelling at the value Plex are offering.
My issue arises in the following scenario. There is a sporting event I really want to watch, but I canāt get to it at the start time (or I want to delay my start so I can skip past half time or ads). But I want to watch before it finishes the suspense canāt be spoiled by a news service or a thoughtless friend. So I set Record. I join later and try to skip forward to the start of the match. Occasionally this is trouble free, but often the server hangs up and I canāt do anything. Sometimes exiting and re-entering the recording will restore navigation, but if it has failed once it will often restart in random places or not at all. In my most recent experience of the France-South Africa World Cup rugby game, it took a full 30 minutes of fiddling to get to the kick off (the game was about half way through). I think that in this case there were some transmission problems at the start of the programme and that may have affected frame data in the recording, but the problem is consistent. I might be able to do what I expect 5% of the time, but 95% is a frustrating fight. I imagine this is covered elsewhere but I couldnāt find it.
Once the game has finished and I access the complete recording, navigation is fine.
Thanks for any information on status or tips/workaroundsā¦
I experience the same problems and we arenāt alone, I think this is a platform independent server side issue, linking to other reported issues (and other clients) to help dev team track down and resolve the actual problem:
Plex team, this is still an ongoing problem! Does any dev use the DVR functionality? It would drive me nuts as a software developer to experience this!
Hi. I wrote an update a few days ago and somehow it failed to post. Iāll try again. Short answer is that I now have an acceptable, maybe even good behaviour in this situation.
Long answer: I have been able to make a number of upgrades over recent months and it seems one, or a combination of these upgrades has resulted in Plex behaving OK in this scenario. Iām in the Apple world and I upgraded from a shared, old Mac mini to a (then new) dedicated M1 Mac mini that doesnāt do any work other than serve Plex. Later, at my content consuming location, I was able to upgrade my internet connect to Fibre at 600MB. It might be worth adding that most of my consumption is on an LG TV and Iām not sure the LG app is great. More recently I was able to upgrade to Fibre at the server location - also 600MB. It was only after this final upgrade that replay during live recording started to work acceptably for me. Subsequently, following a price increase, I downgraded my Fibre connection at the consuming location to 300MB and performance continues to be acceptable.
All OS and Plex versions are kept at latest official release.
So if anyone is trying to troubleshoot the issue, I suspect things like connection speed and/or latency in the network may be factors in re-creating the problem. But perhaps that only becomes the limiting factor after increasing processing power. I donāt know if software testing happens on poor network connections, but if it is limited to lab conditions that could prevent developers seeing the issue.
āSpend a bucket load of moneyā doesnāt seem like a helpful answer, but I hope developers are reading this thread and it provides some clues about where to look for the issue.
