ESC Key Not Working - Player Mac

Server Version#:1.16.51554
Player Version#:1.2.0.875-b7362913

Please bring back the ESC key. I tend to navigate more with the keyboard vs a mouse. Very frustrating that I can’t use the ESC key to backup.

Was this working in a previous Plex, like 1.1.0 or 1.0.0? I can’t recall, I just know I used it a lot when in TV mode on PMP. It’s very satisfying to be able to mash your way backwards with ESC.

This changed a while ago. I wish ESC still worked…

You’re quoting things from nearly two years and that apply to Plex Media Player. This thread is about the new Desktop Player for Mac.

Having said that ;^), your second quote about pressing the x will stop playback is correct.

That I don’t know… I’m trying to find a previous version to reinstall

Yes, because to my knowledge that’s the last time that ESC worked. I tried ESC when the new Plex came out because I was hopeful the old behavior would be back, but alas only X seems to work.

I don’t know if it worked in 1.0, but I know in the old player (before they started making drastic changes to it) it worked in fullscreen mode. I also found that the “S” key doesn’t enable/disable subtitles anymore… I feel like they have ripped a bunch of usability out of the new client. Of course I was always in fullscreen mode of the client which doesn’t exist anymore. With the old client being discontinued in March of 2020, I might have to look at the competition since the Mac client is the vast majority of my viewing. I feel like it is going the way of the Windows 10 client which is just as bad if not worse last time I tried it. Non of the shortcut keys working in that one like the ESC key or even the arrow keys wouldn’t skip forward or back.

As a workaround you can switch to Plex Media Player, where it’s fun to make you own keybinds using an Inputmap that work in TV mode. Esc is a little tricky, as it’s mapped to back which really isn’t stop.

A cool feature Plex supports is short vs long keypresses. So you can map two things to one key. By default, Esc maps the following way:

"(Esc|Backspace)": { "short": "back", "long": "exit" },

You could change part of that to "long": "stop"

At this point, nothing I know will stop confirmation dialog boxes, but I’d vote up a feature request for never show this again

Definitely this if you need/prefer keyboard control.
