Every new comment on a question thread is assumed to be the answer

I have noticed that every time someone replies to a “Question” topic in the forum, the post is automatically flagged as “Answered”, and removed from the list of “unanswered” threads. Even my replies to my own question are automatically flagged as an answer. I realize that the OP is offered a button to affirm whether the comment actually answers their question before changing the icon from a gray “answered” badge to a green one, but why assume that every reply is an answer to the question in the first place? It seems more often than not, it’s other users asking for more details or providing other feedback on the question.

Why not allow the person making the comment to indicate whether they believe they are providing an answer rather than assuming it always is?

Annoying, ain’t it?

  1. after the nag-ware kicks in mark every reply as a no answer, or an answer - know you’re going to be spammed and expect it to happen, 'cause it will.
  2. make a conscience decision right now to never ask another question on this forum for as long as you live (my personal favorite).

the grey Answered just signifies that a question has been responded to with an answer, but not necessarily the correct answer. It isn’t marked with a Green answered until the OP marks it as the correct answer.

…and this is just a function of how the Vanilla forum software works. The software assumes that every reply to a post is an attempt to answer the question.

@hthighway Although, typical comments by @JuiceWSA prove that assumption false. :))

Guilty, as charged, but it’s interesting to note that I’m closing in on 200 answers so looking at my post count (and checking with Jethro Bodine in the Ciphering Department) that means that 80% +/- of my responses are BS - and frankly, that’s a ratio I can live with.

My response to Hercule Tiberius Highway is that explaining how the forum works in no diminishes it’s ability to defy logic and annoy.

I checked the Vanilla forums forums and, as you say, this is “just the way it is”. It’s a function of the Q&A plugin, which is maintained by the Vanilla core team. If any of you are interested, I created a thread there to suggest modifying the plugin to allow a user to indicate whether they are providing an answer or just commenting. Maybe someone will see it: Add "Post Answer" button to questions — Vanilla Forums

Ugh! And now the Plex forum is continuing to spam me to accept/reject “answers” even after I have rejected them. @JuiceWSA , I think your suggestion is best - just don’t ever ask a question. What a pain!

Here’s some more spam for ya, but @beckfield may come along shortly to spam you a bit and let you know how his request at Vanilla is doing - I’m assuming not too well as the rumor is that a head developer over there has already made an ass of himself at least once.

Use some electrical tape and cover the lower left corner of the screen where the message continues to popup. Not as permanent as something like white-out so at some point if you change your mind you can see them again.

LOL!

(spam, spam, spam, spam… wonderful spam… excellent spam [message too short, Vanilla. Go Figure] )

I think most of us who have complained about this have just quit using the Ask Question option, and just use ‘Start a Discussion’ instead.

I wasn’t going to spam you about my experience with Vanilla, hoping your experience might be better, but, yeah, since @JuiceWSA mentioned it, they don’t seem to be too interested in hearing what people don’t like about their product.

My poll about the issue I complained about didn’t get much interest here, so I guess there’s not much chance of Plex adding their voice.
