Exactly is the new Plex Media Client replacing?

Server Version#: 4.63.0
Player Version#:

I have been using Plex to play my video library, but I never have understood Plex Web, Plex Media Server, Plex Media Player, et.al. I am not technically savvy enough to know exactly what this new “client” is, what it is replacing, and how to use it. All I really understand is when I open Plex (whatever) the heading just shows “PLEX” and it shows up as a channel on my Ruko, I click on it and play my videos. Can someone kindly explain or send a link to a detailed article for us remedial users?

If you’re using the Plex app on our Roku, you don’t need to bother about Plex Web or some desktop clients.

App Category Comment
Plex Web Browser web frontend; very flexible but also among the most limited players when it comes to compatibility and codec support (-> meaning: the server will need to transcode a lot of media types)
Plex for Mac/Windows/Linux Desktop client client targeted for desktop users; this app looks quite similar to the web interface but has better support to play media without the need for your server to transcode it.
Plex HTPC Desktop / HTPC client optimized to be used on a computer that’s connected to a big-screen TV (-> HTPC = Home Theatre PC). This app replaces the old Plex Media Player which is no longer supported.

Thank you so much, tom80H. I still don’t understand how all these things intermingle, but at least I know that the PLEX app on my Ruko is all that I need for my simple needs.
