Reproduced by me: I have play movie and then load external czech subtitles. Nothing happens, subtitles wont show PMS show loaded.
It does not work on TV, Web player.

Can you post the XML for that file?
I tried the sample and I see subs if using the included steam and adding external (downloaded).

Sorry for not responding…been in a hospital for a while.
So where I can get that xml file from ? Hint pls.
Go to the “Get Info” sreen on that item, and then press the “View XML” link in the bottom left

Working fine here with that sample and sub selected in the web player (Firefox).
I also looked into the log and the Transcoder seems to have no complains about the sub.
If its not showing it doesn’t seem to be server related or the content.
Which browser are you using?
I am using latest stable version of chrome.
I have problem when I use subtitles in plex web player and on samsung TV 2017.
Subs never show up
I now noticed you report this with 1.5.8, but I was tryign to repo in more recent versions.
Can you update to last public (1.16.2) I just tried that and chrome (Version 75.0.3770.142) using both the bundled and app.plex.tv versions of the web app and still no issues with this file and subs
Updated to 1.16.2 but still no subs…
I can give you access to my server if you want to test it…because it looks like it doesnt work just on my server…
SO I found just a sec ago where the root of the problem is !
Original file has encoding in ANSI - language and special characters are ok in my language in this file
So original file with ANSI wont show subs in my movie on plex.
Edited file - I have switched from ANSI to UTF-8 - language and characters are still ok in my language nothing has changed except encoding.
Edited file with UTF-8 encoding will play subs in my movie on plex.
So just dont tell me that I need to edit every srt. file in every movie in my library to get this work properly.
Competitor Emby can play subs in ANSI or in UTF-8 correctly without problem…
Do you need more info, logs, etc… for this issue or you already know how to fix it please ?
I’m confused now the sample you sent me add the subs in the video file just another stream, but now you seem to be describing that its another (Srt file that you’re adding) that doesn’t play.
So that’s why I couldn’t repo.
As for none UTF-8 some might play but might still have issue, so yeah you should make sure they are all utf-8 see: https://support.plex.tv/articles/200471133-adding-local-subtitles-to-your-media/
Btw you can probably find a way to convert all of them without edit which might be easier/quicker google does show a bunch of options.
Found this i.e. (for linux but should work in freebsd):

Ofc you would need to chance the ext and then rename the files back to .srt… and maybe there are other solutions as well even for windows (the screenshot looks like notepad right)

Tried everything, but still it worked for a day and then again it stopped.
Seems like you dropped support for legacy coding but as it seems, most of subtitles are still coded in ANSI and just a few in UTF-8.
Is this really the right way you said ? Legacy movies are unplayble because of subtitles, and I dont think somebody will change coding on 800+ movies.
As the article says we don’t fully support that encoding:
Tip! : You’ll want to make sure the subtitle file is saved as the UTF-8 character encoding. Other encodings may work, but could also result in strange character displays.
So yes it might actually work for some but note for others.

I’m confused now, the movies do play right? I don’t see why this would cause any issues there, it should only affect the subtitles stream not video or audio.
We are talking about separate “SRT” files right? or is this embedded in the media it self?
Yes movies plays, but can you watch movie in foreign language without subs ?
Till now I had problem with external srt files but from yesterday I checked embedded subs too and it looks like it have same problem as external srt…no subs.
I have tried to tune setting on TV and lastly what worked for embedded subs is that direct stream or diresct play mut be turned off (really dunno why) and subs must be set up to be visible always(dunno where the settings was).
So should I take this as a solution or as a temporary workaround ? Because I think direct stream and direct play has something to do with better streaming am I right ?
I though you meant you couldn’t actually play the file at all.
Can you post the XML of one of such files, If possible also a sample?
It odd that even embedded subs would be using ansi but maybe its due to the language or something.

As for what’s better, transcoding requires the CPU in the server to be able to handle it, in some cases like with none text based subs (pgs, vob) it’s expensive for the CPU because they have to be burned in.
Direct Play requires the client to be able to play the container and codecs (and subs), if the client can do it then it doesn’t require much effort on the server.
Direct Stream happens if i.e. the client can handle the container (mkv,mp4) and say the video codec (h264) but not the audio codec (i.e. ac3), in this case the video is copied and only the audio is transcoder which doesnt really take much effort from the CPU.

As for your nice explanation, that means when I switch off theese functions the transcoding will consume more CPU power. So its not optimal for me now…
