Face ID for Plex on iOS devices: bug or purposely removed (and why)?

Same issues here after upgrading to iPhone 14 Pro Max. My previous iPhone 12 Pro Max had FaceID working fine. Now I can only use a PIN. There is no setting in Plex app for FaceID and toggling the app setting as described in this thread has zero affect. Also, on my iPad mini TouchID doesn’t work.

What’s up, Plex??

Went ahead and placed a one-star review on the App Store in an attempt to get ANY sort of response from Plex about this. I hate doing that, but I don’t know what else to do if they simply won’t confirm if this was removed intentionally or not. Any update at all is better than silence.

Please don’t let me forget to update my review if Plex ever responds to this issue. :joy:

Just bumping this post to make sure it doesn’t expire. Sure would be nice to get a response here.

Hi @BigWheel , @anon18523487 ,

I have seen you post on the iOS forum for various issues and wanted to see if this is something either of you might be able to comment on or forward this to the appropriate iOS Plex dev to comment on?

Asked iOS team and it was not intentionally removed. They are going to try to figure out what broke it. Thanks for report.

Good news

Thanks very much for following up.

Thank you so much for responding!

Just moved from an iPhone X to an iPhone 14 pro max both running latest version of iOS and Plex. I also can still use faceid instead of my pin on the iPhone X I’ve been using for years, but not on the new phone.

Nice to know it’s a bug, but also disappointing that there’s zero support articles on faceID at all, and even for pins there’s only a short one on how to deal with a forgotten pin and not how to set one in the first place. That article could be improved for sure.

I too was having this issue after i upgraded to an iPhone 14 pro, and could not find any information anywhere on how to restore face id functionality. Hopefully there is a fix soon, i hate using pins when everything else unlocks with face id.

Hi @BigWheel

As it’s been about a month since the last communication, is there any news on the status of this issue?

As far as I can tell it is towards the top of the list of bugs they are working on so should be soon. I bumped the bug report as well.

Good to know - thanks for the update! Really looking forward to having this back again. It’s almost 2023 and no one should be relegated to typing a PIN
Happy Holidays, all!

I have confirmed that Face ID is once again working as per…

One odd thing though is that Face ID is not necessarily consistently being required.

I had made a post about this some time ago without a reply but it is very possible it is related more to the iOS beta I am on than Plex (but not sure). Perhaps someone not on the beta iOS could confirm?

yes, i’m on ios 16.2 and i can confirm that when switching users the faceID only triggers the first time. i have to force close the app to have the faceID trigger again

Hi, thanks for reporting. The engineers are aware of the issue but it’s currently not being worked on. I will let you know when I know more

Hi @Justina_plex ,

It’s been some time so I just wanted to see if there has been any progress on this issue.

EDIT: I realized on review that the question may have been about Face ID being required on subsequent launches of the app. If that is the case, then please ignore my post below.

This issue was confirmed fixed in December. If it’s still not working for you, I recommend deleting the app and reinstalling to ensure it can properly request access to Face ID/Touch ID.

No worries

Just as a double check I did reinstall but the issue remains on v8.16
