Picture in Picture bug in the new iOS Plex app

When I am watching a movie and switch to PiP mode, then return to the app, the movie freezes, even though it shows as playing. If I try to put it in PiP again, it no longer works, it will just freeze. Here is a video with this issue: ScreenRecording_04-01-2025 18-50-34_1.MP4 - Google Drive

Same, and it doesn’t work at all for Live TV.

Yeah, same here, issue on both the iPad app and iOS version of the app

When I swipe away the player still plays but no pop-out picture

However, I managed to get it to work in the iPad by selecting “minimise” from the … at the top of the app window

Same issue here. And once when I switched back to the app the pip window stayed visible but went black.

Mine doesn’t even go into PiP mode anymore  This certainly has been quite a frustrating rollout…

The black box hasn’t happen in a while, but when I do go back to full screen the show pauses. Then you have to hit pause, and play again.

Ok I can reliably reproduce the black box. If you switch to PiP mode, and then app switch back to the Plex App, or tap it from the home screen, the video leaves PiP mode (just plays full screen), but the PiP window doesn’t close, and just goes dark.

Also when you close the dark PiP box (tap X in upper left corner), the video playing in fullscreen pauses.

Same issue here, PiP on iPad is totally broken.

Yeah and the more I use it the more intermittent even getting into PiP mode it seems.

Not only PiP is very inconsistent on iPad, they also changed the overall PiP capabilities in their last release.
Previously, you could either do a full iOS PiP and access other Apps while the video was being played as PiP, or you could press the upper left downward arrow to enable PiP inside of Plex.
That was quite useful as sometimes you were wondering if you had other movies/shows with this actor or this director, and you could look for it while it was still playing.
Or simply just to answer the age old question, “What’s his name again?”.
Now you have to X out of your video, do your thing and resume afterward.

iPad Pro 10.5 here - PiP is completely busted - I deeply regret hitting update in the App Store.

And now, after 2 seemingly unrelated updates on the App Store having resolved none of the previous bugs, when using PiP it just plays background audio.
It only does the proper PiP behavior you’d come to expect somewhat randomly…

I also experience that bug. Automatic PiP is essentially broken and the PiP button is gone.

2025.13.0 hasn’t improved this situation.

Also something new is that if you are in PiP (an intermittent adventure) or just not in the app but the audio is still playing and a Tv episode ends, it doesn’t move on to the next one without a hard close. It is just hung when you return to the app.

In 2025.14.0 (latest beta version) PiP is much improved. The button at the top right is back, the black box issue I reported is fixed. The media keeps playing when switching between PiP and full screen. So it’s looking much better.

I imagine it will update in the production channel fairly soon, but obviously I don’t know when exactly.

they have rolled 2025.14.0 to production channel. May take a bit for everybody to get it but the beta for this version lasted all of 1 day

Still broken for LiveTV though.

I have the PiP button too but when I click it nothing happens. Can’t activating it by playing a video then app switching or returning to the Home Screen either. Anyone know if that’s a bug or if there’s a setting I need to address?

same here HD home run LIVE TV PIP goes to a grey box when minimizing.

Yes broken for Live TV also for me. Honestly seems like Plex have stopped responding to forums again, so back to normal ignoring customers situation, so don’t expect any quick fixes here. I can’t believe that no one thought to test PIP with Live TV playback, but I guess Q&A hasn’t been a strong capability for Plex since I started using it many moons ago.
