I recently restored my iPad Pro (11" gen 3) from iOS 16 beta 7 to the most recent non-beta 15.6.1.
When I setup my Face ID on the device, many of the Face ID enabled apps would prompt to use Face ID when opened (expected).
I recall Plex used to have a toggle for Face ID in the account settings of the main account but I believe that went missing a bit ago. However, whenever I uninstalled/installed Plex on my iPad it would always instead prompt to use Face ID.
Note: I am currently using home users which allows for toggling between various accounts on the login page. This always worked with Face ID before as it is the main admin account that had the option.
I did the following to try and troubleshoot/correct the issue…
uninstalled/reinstalled the Plex app
this includes doing a restart of the iPad between the steps
removed any entry of the device from the Authorized devices section in PMS
this includes doing the above uninstall/reinstall afterwards
though I was prompted that the account was reset, when I used my Google Auth I was logged in as expected but not prompted to enable Face ID
switched between accounts
I haven’t tried the Test Flight Beta for Plex but not sure that would make a difference since I hadn’t needed that prior to this to have it work.
My iPhone works without issues but then again I did not uninstall/reinstall it or restore the device recently.
My questions are…
has Face ID been purposely removed and/or no longer supported for new installations of Plex?
is there a workflow which can be done in order to get Face ID working again or has the Face ID toggle been moved somewhere else?
Some other additional testing I did but were not successful…
use email account vs Google auth (after doing the recently recommended password reset on it)
cleared the cache data
tried using the Test Flight v8.8
modified the PIN for the main user in PMS
The one difference I am seeing in my iPhone is that under the Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Other Apps it does have Plex as an entry. This is not surprising due to it used to prompt me and when the apps do that they get stored in that area. Basically Plex on my iPad is just not prompting me
@Stormdragon
Are you absolutely sure face ID was possible in the past? I don’t recall ever seeing it.
Is it possible that you had the “Automatically sign in” option enabled in the past? This would actually just sign you into your own account and I guess could be mistaken for Face ID doing the same thing.
I am sure I used to be able to use Face ID on the iPad. I recall even thinking “why when I click on Plex when it is playing on the background I use Face ID to unlock the iPad but then I need to click my Plex account at the login screen and Face ID again instead of it just piping me through in one shot”
I definitely did not have the “automatically sign in” mainly b/c I use PIN accounts for my family on all devices (and that basically would disable it for my device).
They announced this back in 2019 (and it was under iOS, not specific to iPhone/iPad)…
And it used to be a toggle in the main Plex account on the device(s). However, over time the toggle disappeared but, as I mentioned, iPhone would prompt if you wanted to allow Face ID but the iPad is not.
Face ID for Plex is still working on my iPhone right now so I am a little concerned if I have to reinstall the OS and lose this functionality.
One possibility I was thinking is that it used to be there, I enabled it, I used it but then perhaps Plex removed support for it for iPads…so that when I re-installed it then it no longer works. But without a dev chiming in it is all theory
Any update on this thread? After recently moving to a new iPhone I have also lost the ability to use FaceID. It is an option in the app’s System Setting pane, but there is no prompt to actually configure it within the app. I’ve tried both the current shipping version of the app and then reinstalling the latest beta with no resolution either way.
If you go to the iPhone Settings app (not within the Plex app) and then scroll down to find the entry for Plex at the bottom of that menu, within that Plex entry I see an option for Face ID (along with access to Photos, Bluetooth, etc.).
However, toggling that option doesn’t seem to help.
It worked brilliantly for me for months until the recent phone upgrade, but now I’m back to passcodes each time.
Interesting. Also interesting that it doesn’t appear to actually do anything after playing with multiple variations of turning it on/off in conjunction with other settings.
Hopefully this is a bug? Something that was introduced a while back, but went unnoticed by me since the setting was already enabled. Not sure how to raise this to Plex’s attention outside of this thread.
Trying to find an answer to this, as well. I still have the Face ID option in Settings > Plex even after deleting and reinstalling the app to see if that fixed it. It worked perfectly until I moved to a new phone. Super aggravating to have it just go away after two years of working perfectly.
Just upgraded from iPhone 13 Pro to iPhone 14 Pro - still got both phones Face ID works on iPhone 13 Pro not on iPhone 14 Pro. As per previous posts I have been through all the usual attempts to cure with no success. It’s too much hassle to flatten the iPhone 14 as it’s taken me a day to get everything logged in and working. This seems to be the only App where I’ve not been able to change setting/re-install to sort. I will keep trying and post if successful otherwise it’s down to someone at Plex to have a look hopefully.
Tried with Production and Test Flight Beta.
Possibly. Photos is not listed for me, but Face ID is, even after deleting and reinstalling the app. Which means it must have remembered it had permission from before, as it definitely hasn’t requested access again. There isn’t even an option anywhere under any of the settings to enable or disable it, except in the Settings app (which is automatically generated by iOS). I just don’t understand why a feature that was a key marketing point when it was released was simply removed without notice.
Right?! I don’t need it back today. I just need to know if it’s coming back at all. How hard is it to just answer the question so we can all take this particular item out of our brains to make room for other thoughts.
