Failed to install PlexMediaServer. QTS detected an unauthorized change in the app

Server Version#: Plex Media Server 1.19.3.2843. QNAP TVS-951X QTS Version 4.4.2.1320 (2020/05/19)
Player Version#:

I have received notifications of updated versions of Plex Media Server. I’ve attempted to update every time I receive a notification of a new version but keep receiving the following error:
[App Center] Failed to install PlexMediaServer. QTS detected an unauthorized change in the app.

This error has occurred while trying to upgrade 3 or 4 out of the past 5 version updates. Since this error started, I have already updated my QNAP QTS once or twice, but that doesn’t seem to make much difference.

The latest version that I’ve been trying to update to is: PlexMediaServer-1.19.4.2935-79e214ead-x86_64.qpkg

Any thoughts on what might be the issue?

Same issue here snap ts-473 latest patch

  1. Regarding the QTS detected an unauthorized change. This is because the published checksum and the checksum (sha1sum) of the file do not match. There was a downloading error or the package was altered. If downloaded from App Center (QNAP store), please contact QNAP. They are responsible for publishing the checksum info.

  2. Plex does not support SNAP packaging on QNAP systems.
Please refer to the source / provider.

Hi ChuckPa, thanks for your response. The installation package that I installed came directly from Plex, not via the App Store. I’ve obtained these packages in two ways – neither of which seemed to install properly – (1) clicking the link to update when notified in the web version of PMS, and (2) via the server download section of Plex’s website. Packages obtained via both of these means have given the same error over the past few versions of PMS.

What type computer do you have? Win, Mac, or Linux?
Which browser(s) ?

  1. PMS will not update itself on QNAP by clicking the link. I’d love to make a way for PMS to upgrade itself on all systems but most do not have the necessary privilege level to do so.

  2. Regarding downloading; Depending on OS and browser, we might be able to do a browser-less download.

I use Windows 10 with Chrome browser. I download the latest server package, open up QNAP, and then manually upload/install the package. It worked for several months without issue. its just the past several versions over the past few months that have been a bit more hit and miss.

I’d like to suggest, since I work with QNAP on keeping App Center up to date, go check the version available to you in App Center.

If you find it newer, then install it. You’ll be getting a proper download without intermediate agent (your windows machine).

Another choice you have is FireFox or even Edge. All the browsers have their moments so no one is always safe

Thank you for the suggestion. That seemed to work! I used MS Edge browser to download the package from the website, but still used Chrome to connect to my NAS and upload/install it.

The Qnap AppCenter currently shows version 1.16.6 (specifically (2019/10/29) as the most recent.

The one I had installed is V1.19.3
I have now installed the latest available from Plex (V1.19.4).

If I encounter any issues on the next update I’ll be sure to report back. Much appreciated ChuckPa!
