“Failed to run the package service” DS918+

NAS: DS918+
Plex version : 1.15.1.791-8bec0f76c
DSM Version : DSM 6.2.1-23824 Update 6

Hello Plex Users ,

I’m getting the “Failed to run the package service” error on every NAS restart or shut down.

I even tried stopping the server via the package center, before I do a restart or shutdown. However the issue persists.

I’m able to restart the server, once I get root access and do these steps listed below. Thank you ChuckPA , for the detailed instructions they helped a lot.

Steps ( to save space , here is the link to all the steps I followed "Failed to run the package service" - #5 by Billionaire

I didn’t have to do a DSM reset deleting plex user was enough to resolve the issue

However I don’t want to have to do this every time I have to restart or shut down the server (usually its running 24/7, but this issue in getting annoying)

Here is what the terminal returned when I did the command lines (see attached txt file)

And only one Plex server shows up

sh-4.3# sudo -su root
sh-4.3# cd /
sh-4.3# ls /volume*/@appstore
AntiVirus LogCenter Plex Media Server Virtualization
sh-4.3#
echo /volume*/@appstore/Plex*
/volume1/@appstore/Plex Media Server

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

Fixed the issue , just deleted the Plex Share folder . I backed up my settings but metadata refresh is being done. I should have attempted all the steps ChuckPA posted lol again Thank You ChuckPA.

Glad I could help, albeit it belated

Hi, I am having this same problem on a DS916+. Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling PMS but that hasn’t fixed the problem. Would like to try deleting the plex share folder but not sure of the full steps for doing this and how to back up my settings and metadata. Can anyone assist with detailed steps? Sorry, not very technical so need a bit of extra help especially if the steps involve using terminal. I am using a 2011 iMac running High Sierra. thanks in advance

The computer you’re using to access the DiskStation doesn’t matter.
You don’t need the terminal.

  1. Open DSM in your browser
  2. Remove the Plex package (this removes the software)
  3. Control Panel - Users - Delete the Plex user
  4. Control Panel - Shared Folders - Delete the Plex share.
  5. Restart DSM
  6. Now you can install completely fresh

Making the backup (your request)

  1. Make a ZIP file of Library in the Plex share. (Right-click on Library - Compress to Library.zip)
  2. Save it / download from the NAS.
  3. Now you can completely undo the NAS as you deem appropriate.

Failling to run the package service implies the Plex share permissions are wrong.
It must be owned by user Plex

Thanks for your help and for the instructions. This issue happened shortly after I changed the share permissions after the recent security changes. I followed the instructions provided by Plex and was able to successfully connect to Plex after that but the next day this issue happened. Before I back up and reinstall everything, could I ask you to clarify your last statement, that the Plex share must be owned by user Plex? I have a plex user set up and have given the plex user read access to the plex share. Is this sufficient? Or I have missed something? thanks again

If this happened after you were changing permissions:

The Plex share must be owned by user Plex – this is required and will prevent it from starting.

You might want to start here and walk through, matching mine.

I compared my settings to yours and it looks like the permissions are ok. Do you think it’s worthwhile deleting my plex share folder? I downloaded the logs but not sure if they will show what the problem is. Logs.zip (3.1 MB)

As a simple test:

  1. PMS uninstalled
  2. Rename the Plex share to Plex-old
  3. Install package
  4. Setup a new server with a TEST name (keep the name unique so you can identify it)
  5. See what happens now.

I followed your instructions and got the same error so it isn’t an issue with the plex share. Any other ideas? Cheers

You will need to:

  1. backup your synology configuration
  2. Perform a DSM reinstall (which keeps your shares)
  3. Use the Synology Assistant

https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledgebase/DSM/tutorial/General_Setup/How_to_reset_my_Synology_NAS

You will want to install their assistant and then perform

Step #3 ( Mode 2 ) which installs DSM itself.

I reinstalled DSM one week ago and did not need my old configuration backup.
All shares were found as before.
You will need to reinstall your applications

Success!!! Plex is now back up and running. Thank you so much!!
