Starting with iOS14, Apple is allowing family sharing for in-app purchases. Will this be added to the Plex app on iOS? As our main use case is to watch on TV, we don’t want to buy the in-app purchase on iOS for everyone. But if it was shareable, we would instantly buy it. (I don’t know how to tell if it’s available from the App Store/inside the app but it is fairly new and I haven’t seen this in the release notes of the iOS Plex app)
Well… I just installed and purchased the iOS client considering that it was part of Family Sharing options… Hitting the wall on my wife’s iPhone. Can’t activate the client. Obviously, the Plex In-App purchased can’t be restored.
According to Plex this should now be working. But after trying to activate on my wife’s iPad…no luck. They blame Apple. Apple Support blames them. Oh no.
I’m also unable to get this to work. Using the “Restore Purchase” button bring up “Uh-oh! No previous purchase could be found for this Apple ID”. Can anyone confirm that they’ve actually been able to get family sharing to work for the Plex iOS app?
Edit: My issue might have been related to the Plex outages yesterday. Family sharing seems to be working fine for me now on both sub-accounts
So is Family Sharing working or not for Plex now (May 2021) It used to work on my son’s iPad then stopped. Had this issue some time ago and did the “restore purchase” and it started working again. Then today he tried to use Plex and can only play back 1 minute without “activating.” Tried the “restore purchase” but keep getting the Oh-no message. His iPad user account is in my family sharing AND even created a new Plex account with his Apple ID email. Still does not work. What is going on??
I am having the same issue and it’s extremely annoying and Plex support asked me to post here. It has made Plex worthless since my kids can no longer use it since they are both under my family sharing
To make matters even more ridiculous I am happy to pay another 5 bucks to activate my other devices for my kids but because they are part of the family sharing it won’t even let me do that.
So Plex is completely inoperable now for anybody in family sharing. Seems crazy. Can anybody assist?
So a day or two later, the family share started working. Sorry I didn’t come back here and update. But Plex has been very frustrating lately. This Family Share issue and when my internet went out, I couldn’t watch anything only to find out I HAVE to have internet for Plex to sign me in??? I want a simple, stand alone, streaming server that if I’m in. Y own network, I don’t need internet for it to sign me in. Ok, done with my rant.
Looking at your Plex account, it appears that the iOS device linked to the account is running iOS 13.6.1. The ability to share in-app purchases with Apple’s “Family Sharing” feature requires at least iOS 14.0 on the device. (To be clear, that’s an Apple requirement for the feature functionality, not something we control.)
So, it looks like you just need to update the iOS software on your child’s device. After you update to at least iOS 14.0, you should be able to follow the instructions in our article.
